No Adobe Flash 10.1 Support On Windows Mobile 6.5

No Adobe Flash Support On Windows Mobile 6.5

Adobe (NASDAQ:ADBE) Flash 10.1 is expected to be available around the middle of this year. Flash 10.1 will offer a number of new features and enhancements that will benefit mobile users significantly.

However, there is a caveat to this statement. When the new release of Adobe Flash rolls out mobile users using handsets powered by Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.5 will not be able to perform the software upgrade as this release will be for new WP7 only. According to Antonio Flores, who spoke on behalf of Adobe, “We have made the tough decision to defer support for that platform until WinMo7. This is due to the fact that WinMo6.5 does not support some of the critical APIs that we need.”

This news certainly will not please many in the mobile community but to add to the misery, Android users and more specifically, Android phones without an ARM v7 Cortex chipset will also not have access to Flash 10.1 which would essentially limit usability to those that have one of either the Motorola Droid, Google Nexus One or the upcoming HTC Legend and HTC Desire.

TigerText – iPhone Application For Cheating Spouses

Sunday 28 February 2010 @ 8:27 am

TigerText - iPhone Application For Cheating Spouses

A new iPhone application has been developed for the would be international spy or the cheating spouse, with the latter more likely considering that this application is called TigerText rather HawkeText after Ethan Hawke from the Mission Impossible franchise.

TigerText allows mobile users to set time limits for text messages to be retained after being sent. When that time span has elapsed, the text message will automatically self destruct, wait a minute, automatically be deleted and will not be available on the mobile phone of the message sender, receiver or any intermediary server.

How does TigerText accomplish this? A person sends a secret message to his mistress using this software application. The mistress will receive notice that a text message is waiting for her but in order to read it, she must install an app. Once done, she can read the message, but she will not be able to save the message as the message was never really sent to her mobile phone. Instead, it resides on a TigerText server and after the time period that the sender set has elapsed, this message will be deleted from the server so that no one can read it. The auto-destruct can be set anywhere from one minute to five days and for the ultra security conscious, a “delete on read” setting is available which sets a timer to count down from 60 seconds with the message being gone forever one the countdown hits zero.

Jeffrey Evans is the developer of this application and he says that the name TigerText was in place before the recent Tiger Woods scandal and a decision was made to retain this name after the scandal broke. Although it does sound like this application would make its way onto the iPhones of philanderers, Evans points out the development of this application was because “People text like they talk,” “And some of the things they say, taken out of context, can come back to haunt them.”

He expects this iPhone application to be an invaluable tool for those with real privacy issues such as lawyers who may be sending time sensitive client information that should not be retained.

EU – Google Street View Refreshed Every 6 Months

EU - Google Street View Refreshed Every 6 Months

Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Street View, an add-on for both Google Maps and Google Earth allows Internet users to see street level detail for supported cities that have been captured by a Google car, or the Google snowmobile which was used to capture parts of Whistler Village for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

Typically, Google retains these digital photographs for a period of 12 months as this time frame assists them in improving the quality and accuracy of both their mapping process and facial blurring which they perform to maintain user privacy.

Recently, the European Union (EU) sent Google written notice that the retention period needs to be reduced to 6 months as the 12 month time frame is “disproportionate.” The biggest issue that the EU has with the search engine stems from privacy concerns and data protection issues which Google had met as part of its initial requirements.

In another interesting bit of news, the EU is requesting that Google do more to make people aware of the days and times when a Google car will be in a specific neighborhood. The rationale behind this is of course to allow European citizens time to make changes to their personal property in the event that there are things that citizens don’t want filmed or captured.

Google Street View has captured some funny pictures already and when a couple of pranksters in Norway heard about the Google car coming, they were all ready in their scuba gear. I can’t help but think that providing advanced times and locations of the Google car will only lead to more crazy pictures cropping up.

Needless to say, Google has objected.

i-tab – World’s First Electronic Songbook

Sunday 28 February 2010 @ 8:27 am

i-tab - World's First Electronic Songbook

i-tab is being billed as the first electronic songbook and the question begs to be asked, what took so long as this looks like a cool idea. i-tab is a 5-inch touchscreen display that attaches to your guitar’s headstock and serves as a digital teleprompter that chalks up chords and lyrics in perfect synchronization to your guitar playing.

The music device comes with 4GB of internal storage which should be sufficient storage space to house your tabs which you can buy online through i-tab’s online store. i-tab is expected to ship around the mid-March time frame and should make its way into music shops some time in April. At the time of launch, the online store will have roughly 5,000 tabs available for purchase with approximately 500 new tabs being added each week.

i-tab comes with integrated speakers, a stylus and data ports for USB and video out allowing for signal out to either a TV or computer screen which may be of benefit if you want to take advantage of a bigger screen while relaxing with your musical instrument or perhaps you have some karaoke singers in the house that just want to sing along. The purchase price for i-tab is $199 and 30 free tabs from popular music artists such as the Rolling Stones, U2 and Oasis will be thrown in.

Intel Pine Trail Atom N470 Processor Coming

Sunday 28 February 2010 @ 8:27 am

Intel Pine Trail Atom N470 Processor Coming

The Intel Pine Trail Atom N470 processor was not the biggest secret in the world as its existence has been known for a while. It looks like Intel may have prematurely announced it today through their Intel PR Chip Shots in a blog post dated for Monday, March 1st. Could someone have an itchy finger over there?

Designed primarily for the netbook category of consumer electronics, the N470 processor is a single core Atom processor that has a clock speed of 1.83GHz, 512k L2 cache and supports DDR2-667. It also includes integrated graphics directly onto the CPU chip.

With the exception of the speed increase, it’s believed that the new Intel processor is similar to the earlier N450 which has a processor speed of 1.66GHz. Although the speed increase may seem negligible, the processor will be used in netbooks which are generally cheaper devices that require better power consumption but offer weaker processor power. Hence, even a subtle performance boost is of some benefit.

Intel expects that over the coming months, OEMs will begin to introduce the new processor in their netbooks, thereby offering distinguished performance for basic computing functions and Internet browsing.

Dell Mini 5 “Tablet Family”

Sunday 28 February 2010 @ 8:27 am

The Dell (NASDAQ:DELL) Mini 5 made its debut at CES 2010 and in early February, the device received FCC approval. It appears that Dell has big plans ahead of them as they try and confront the upcoming launch of the Apple iPad.

Dell has confirmed that they are not looking at launching just a single tablet computer, but rather, the plan is to release a “family of tablets”, each catering to a specific niche group. In comparing what we know about the Dell tablet with the Apple tablet, both have their advantages and disadvantages over one another.

The Dell tablet computer currently includes a 5-inch screen display which is more then two inches smaller then the iPad which boasts a screen size of 9.7-inches. However, Dell has acknowledged that larger screen sizes will be available shortly.

What Dell does have on Apple is the integrated digital camera and phone features which are notably absent on the iPad, a device that ironically is being referred to as a large screen iPhone.

So far, there are no details on price point with Dell only indicating that pricing will be “competitive.” This is something that Dell should be providing soon, especially with the release date of the Apple iPad approaching quickly.

Google Nexus One On Vodafone UK In April Suspected

Google Nexus One On Vodafone UK In April Suspected

The android powered Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Nexus One has been available in the United States for a few months now and it appears that those in the UK may not have much longer to wait as an April launch date is being targeted by both Google and the UK based mobile telecommunication company Vodafone (LON:VOD).

The information comes by way of unnamed sources close to both companies that revealed that March was the preferred month for the UK launch of the Google phone but that the April time frame is more realistic.

It’s believed that the smartphone will only go on sale through Google’s dedicated Nexus One website and that pricing should be comparable to the Apple iPhone. Unlike Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), the Nexus One has only been available online and this may account for some of it’s sluggish sales which will hopefully pick up now that new retail markets will be available shortly. Google does have a challenge on it’s hand in carving out a niche in the mobile phone market that is currently dominated by Apple’s flagship product and Microsoft’s resurgence with their new mobile operating system Windows Phone 7. However, Google did update the Nexus One in January to include multitouch web browsing, thereby putting it on an even ground with the iPhone.

Both Google and Vodafone were unable to commit on the record the April launch date, only stating that the phone would be available “in the spring”.

Windows Phone Starter Edition

Sunday 28 February 2010 @ 8:27 am

Windows Mobile 6.5 Now Windows Phone Starter Edition

Microsoft’s (NASDAQ:MSFT) big announcement at the Mobile World Congress was their new mobile operating system called Windows Phone 7 that would be available on handsets that met the criteria of one of three supported variants. Their earlier mobile OS, Windows Mobile 6.5 was somewhat overshadowed by the news with questions now emerging as to its future in the mobile world.

It looks like there could potentially be two versions of Windows Mobile 6.5 in the form of the still unconfirmed Windows Phone Classic and the now confirmed Windows Phone Starter Edition.

The Windows Phone Starter Edition takes the same approach as the desktop OS Windows XP starter and Windows Vista starter and is expected to be a stripped down version of WP7 with cheaper licensing fees for developing and emerging nations.

WP6 Starter Edition will be available to all Microsoft direct partners and will also be available through MediaTek and BSquare. It will come with and without Office Mobile 2010. Microsoft has also stated that support for 2G, 2.5G, CDMA and TD-SCDMA radios have been included though Engadget does point out that HSDPA 3G is absent, questioning if this was just an oversight or an attempt to promote Windows Phone 7 in emerging countries where 3G networks are available.

Motorola Devour Is Hard to Stomach

Saturday 27 February 2010 @ 7:12 am

Product: Devour Smartphone

Manufacturer: Motorola

Wired Rating: 5

Motorola’s newest Android phone, the Devour, is pretty. Its sleek body, aluminum build and fun slidey screen practically yell, “Pick me up! Play with me!”

And the first thing you’ll want to play with is Devour’s screen. The sliding 3.1-inch LCD can trace its design inspiration back to the T-Mobile Sidekick. It may not open with a flamboyant 180-degree spin but it’s fun to flick up and feels sturdy — there’s no hint it will snap if you push it open too hard.

That said, the phone is a bit heavy and bulky. Dudes: If you’re trying to carry this 5.9-ounce brick around in a pant pocket, it could get awkward (sagging is so ’90s). And ladies: It definitely adds a little unnecessary weight and a lot of unnecessary bulk to the standard clutch. Translation? You’d be better off leaving this leviathan at home on a Saturday night.

Operating the phone is wrought with issues too. The touch-sensitive navigation pad (square button beneath the display) is finicky. Sometimes it slides through screens and icons with precision, and other times it gets stuck on an app and simply doesn’t work. The same holds true of the touchscreen: Movement is jumpy and sticky. After mere minutes of use, the finger sludge that built up on the screen was just plain gross. No part of us wanted to put it up to our face to make a call.

But we did make some calls, and the clarity was decent, albeit with a slight echo. The phone’s UI made navigating calls a breeze. Web browsing is also quick and efficient.

With Motoblur (a proprietary skin Motorola slaps on some of its Android devices) twitter feeds, e-mail and news can be displayed directly on the home screen. If the screen were larger than 3.1 inches, this might be a cool feature. But trying to read updates that appear at less than an inch wide verges on painful and could result in — get ready for it — blurred vision. Blur offers five screens for icons and customizable content, but moving content between screens is difficult because of the fussy touchscreen. There’s just way too much hassle when dragging and dropping icons.

Devour has a QWERTY keyboard option (for when you tire of the miserable touchscreen), but despite its fairly large size, we found it hard to type on the keys. Pressing them down is difficult because the buttons are flush to the base. And the edges of the phone had a tendency to dig into fingers. Ouch!

This phone is not for the aspiring Annie Leibovitz. The 3-megapixel camera failed to take a decent picture; photos consistently appeared dim and unsaturated. There is a handy little button on the side for taking quick photos, but with such abysmal performance, we’d rather tote around a separate point-and-shoot.

Watching videos on the Devour is also severely crippled by that too-small screen. The speaker produces good volume and clarity, but squinting at choppy episode of Lost is just irritating.

As far as Android phones go, there are better choices out there — even from Moto. (The adept Droid leaps to mind.) The Devour, for all its outer beauty is ultimately just another pretty face without much substance behind it.

WIRED Slide-out screen is sturdy, satisfying. Easy aggregation of social networks. Attractive chassis and beautiful build materials.

TIRED Physical keyboard does not make up for atrocious touchscreen performance. Weakling camera. Good gravy, can someone get a crane to lift this heavy thing?

JooJoo Tablet Shipping Delayed

JooJoo Tablet Shipping Delayed

You may remember the JooJoo tablet pc. At one time, it was known as the Crunchpad, the darling of Michael Arrington, founder and co-editor of TechCrunch. As the Crunchpad, this tablet PC received considerable media attention as well as showed promise to change tablet computing. However, over time a falling out between Arrington and his partners Fusion Garage resulted in Arrington being removed from the project and the Crunchpad being renamed the JooJoo tablet.

Since then, there has been litigation and more threats of litigation. Things haven’t gone overly well for Fusion Garage and today, we hear that those that had pre-ordered the JooJoo back in December 2009 with the promise of a February delivery date will now have to wait until at least March 25th, that is assuming there are no further delays.

According to Fusion Garage, the reason for the delays is “due to a manufacturing delay” and “the company is now forecasting that JooJoo will be sent to consumers on March 25.”

This means that it has been at least four months now since it was officially released. By pushing into the March time frame, the JooJoo tablet will now compete directly with the Apple iPad which has an expected release date of late March/early April and with the somewhat tarnished name of Fusion Garage, the question begs to be asked if consumers would stay way from the JooJoo and turn towards the iPad.

Fusion Garage does recognize the customer dissatisfaction that is out there at this time and for what its worth, they will be offering a free accessory device to those that had pre-ordered the tablet.

FCC Approval Of CDMA Nexus One Received

Saturday 27 February 2010 @ 7:12 am

FCC Approval Of CDMA Nexus One Received

When the Android powered Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Nexus One launched, it was no secret that it was heading towards the Verizon network (NYSE:VZ). What we weren’t clear about was when. The only information we had to go on was a vague message stating “Spring 2010!”

Earlier today, a CDMA version (version model PB99300, GSM version PB99100) of the Google Nexus One just passed the stringent testing of the Federal Communications and Commissions. CDMA technology is what is deployed on the Verizon network.

What this means is that there is now a version of the Google Nexus One that has been approved and is compatible with the Verizon network, just waiting to come into the hands of mobile users. As to the exact launch date, well, we still don’t know that.

However, if past history is any indication, typically, FCC approval has usually meant launch date within one month. Again, this is not a surefire proven recipe, but it has been a very general trend. Assuming that Verizon doesn’t throw us a surprise and launch any new smartphones prior to the Nexus One, the Google phone will be first Android powered smartphone with a 1 Ghz Snapdragon processor for the mobile carrier.

Corsair Nova And Reactor Sold State Drives

Corsair, the developers of high speed modules has announced their two latest offerings in the Corsair Nova and the Corsair Reactor SSD (solid state drives). The two drives are similar but do have some subtle difference that may benefit one type of PC user over another.

The Corsair Nova drive comes with an integrated Indilinx Bareboot controller that allows this drive model to offer much faster transfer speeds then the Reactor with the Nova clocking in with a 270MB/s read speed and a 195MB/s write speed. Compare this to the Reactor SSD drive which is slightly slower with a read speed of 250MB/s and a write speed of 170MB/s. On the other hand though, the Reactor SSD includes a USB 2.0 connection, thereby offering alternative means of connectivity.

Standard to both devices is the inclusion of TRIM support which is compatible with Microsoft’s latest desktop operating system, Windows 7. Also included in the offering with both drive versions is a 3.5-inch bracket for desktop mounting.

In terms of reliability, Corsair claims that the new solid state drives are strong performers for up to 1,000,000 hours of use.

The Reactor drives will be available in two drive sizes, 60GB and 120GB and will retail for $184 and $349 respectively. The Nova drives will come in either 64GB and 128GB drive sizes and will be priced at $273 and $369.

RIM Blackberry Slider In The Works?

RIM Blacberry Slider In The Works?

There has always been some thought that Research In Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) would entertain the idea of a new Blackberry model that featured a touchscreen display and a sliding full QWERTY keyboard and from the sounds of it, there appears to be strong support for a new model with these features.

Recently, BGR received word from one of their contacts that RIM is looking to develop a new Blackberry device that would include a slideout keyboard, something reminiscent of what is seen on the Palm Pre and not the HTC which others have speculated.

In addition to the new keyboard layout would come Blackberry OS 6.0 and full support for wireless 802.11n connectivity. What isn’t changing is the display resolution which will remain fixed at 360×480 pixel resolution though it is likely that a touchscreen display will be part of the package.

Additionally, the Verizon exclusivity should terminate with the new model supporting GSM/HSPA connectivity. RIM products do have that persona of being a business product, something that is traditionally used by the corporate client. Adding a touchscreen and a few other features may allow it to better compete in the consumer market which is currently dominated by the likes of the Apple iPhone.

Cheaper Apple iPhones In June Possibly?

Cheaper Apple iPhones in June Possibly?

If you don’t currently own an Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone what would be the reason holding you back? Would it be that you prefer the Google Nexus One or some other Android OS variant, or perhaps you like another brand of smartphone altogether. According to Katy Huberty of the financial services firm Morgan Stanley, one of the pressing issues preventing consumers from buying the Apple device is cost. The cost of both the iPhone hardware and service plans are simply priced to high and this is affecting ownership rates both in developed nations such as the United States as well as in emerging nations.

Huberty predicts that in June of this year, Apple will unveil a low cost alternative that may even include gesture based technology in the hopes that this will make the iPhone more palatable to an even larger consumer base.

It remains to be seen whether this prediction is accurate or not. Historical sales figures do paint a slightly different picture. Back in 2009 when Apple introduced the iPhone 3GS, they had dropped the price of the iPhone 3G to just $99. The result.

The high end iPhone 3GS was still the more popular model amongst consumers.

Asus Eee 1015p, 1016p and 1018p Coming

Saturday 27 February 2010 @ 7:12 am

Asus Eee 1015p, 1016p and 1018p Coming

CeBIT, a digital industry tradeshow that is to occur in Hannover – Germany next month between the dates of March 2nd-6th is expected to be the venue where Asus (TPE:2357) will announce the development of their three latest Eee PCs. The new Asus models are the 1015p, 1016p and 1018p. As the new models fall within the 1000 series, each is expected to come standard with 10-inch display screen and be powered by the Intel Atom N450 processor.

It’s believed that the 1015p is an upgrade to the earlier 1005p model but with a larger touchpad that distinguishes it from its predecessor. Additionally, the 1015p will sport a nicely finished aluminum body, a matte display, chiclet keys as well as a healthy battery life rated for 14 hours of up time provided that the wireless features have been disabled.

Second on the list is the 1016p which is said to be geared more towards the corporate client and will come with a more squared off design. Similar to the 1015p, the 1016p will also have chiclet keys, an aluminum chassis and a 14 hour battery life. No further details are available as to why this one is considered to be an enterprise product but possibly this model will include enhanced security features to minimize corporate risk in the event of theft or loss.

Lastly, the 1018p should also make its debut at CeBIT next month as the thinnest netbook available through Asus at this time. It will also have USB 3.0, a fingerprint scanner and a reduced battery rated for 10 hours of up time.

LG Windows Phone 7 Handset This Fall

Friday 26 February 2010 @ 6:09 am

At the Mobile World Congress where Windows Phone 7 was announced, little was known about the official release date. This information was kept somewhat cryptic with the only hint given was that it should be available “by the holidays”, which seems to infer Labor Day if the information coming from Engadget is valid.

Recently, reporters from Engadget Chinese met up with their counterparts from LG Electronics during the recent Chinese New Years celebrations. Over the course of an event that was held in Hong Kong, LG let it be known that a possible LG smartphone that would be running on Microsoft’s newest mobile operating system, Windows Phone 7 should be available some time between September and November of this year.

Details about what the new LG handset would look like were unavailable, but considering that WP7 will only support 3 types of devices, the LG phone should fit into one of these categories.

Apple iTunes Reaches 10 Billion Downloads

Friday 26 February 2010 @ 6:09 am

Apple’s digital media store iTunes, which offers up popular music, podcasts, audiobooks, video and a whole host of other content formats just reached another milestone today, announcing that 10 billion songs have been downloaded through iTunes.

The achievement was reached on the same day as Apple’s Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs birthday, who by the way turned 55 years of age today. A quick check on the iTunes website today marks the media download achievement with a list of the most popular songs of all time which include such hits as I Gotta Feeling (Black Eyed Peas), Poker Face (Lady GaGa) and Boom Boom Pow (again by the Black Eyed Peas).

In case you are wondering, the 10 billionth download was “Guess Things Happen That Way” by Johnny Cash and the person who downloaded the song was Louie Sulcer of Woodstock, Ga. Sulcer for his part received a $10,000 iTunes gift certificate.

iTunes has now been in business for about 7 years now which means that on an annual basis, roughly 1.4 billion legal song downloads occur each year. This by far makes iTunes the largest online music retailer, but more importantly, this number shows consumer interest in the availability of high quality audio files that can be legally downloaded.

Canadian Mobile Carriers Finish Two Way Video Trials

Friday 26 February 2010 @ 6:09 am

Canadian Mobile Carriers Finish Two Way Video Trials

Three of the larger Canadian mobile carriers, Bell (NYSE: BCE), Rogers (NYSE: RCI) and Telus (NYSE: TU) have successfully tested inter-carrier two-way mobile video calling. Several mobile carriers in Canada already offer video chat features but these types of calls are always between mobile users using compatible handsets on a single carrier network. Today’s announcement marks the first time that this type of mobile call was successfully performed between carriers. It’s expected that when this service does officially launch in Canada, it will create the largest North American two way calling network.

Although mobile carriers are adversaries and competitors to one another, there are many times that cooperation is required for the mutual growth of the individual companies. By offering this service, mobile users are provided with greater flexibility when it comes to mobile communication as the service will be independent of your carrier. Although video chat is still in it’s infancy, it is an emerging technology sector that will only grow with time.

All three providers involved in these trials support the 3G-324M Video Telephony standard, an international standard that governs telephony protocols. There are no additional details available as to when Canadian subscribers can expect these features to be fully rolled out but I’m sure it won’t remain a secret for long.

Nokia N97 Mini Gold Edition

Friday 26 February 2010 @ 6:09 am

Nokia Gold Edition N97 Mobile Phone

The Finnish phone maker Nokia (NYSE:NOK), has announced that they are coming out with a gold edition of their Nokia N97 smartphone. We’ve seen may mobile phones being offered as luxury items but often, these sorts of offerings come by way of independent artists such as Stuart Hughes. It’s a bit unusual to see gadgets such as these being announced by Nokia.

As the name implies, the Mini Gold Edition comes dressed in 18 Carat gold. It also has a few extras thrown in such as “ELLE 360Fashion news”, a software application that lets the mobile user keep up with the latest in fashion trends.

Outside of that, the Mini Gold Edition runs on the same hardware as the N97, a smartphone that received poor reviews due to performance issues and software bugs. The N97 Mini Gold Edition includes a 3.2-inch touchscreen display with 360 x 640 pixel resolution, a slide out full QWERTY keyboard, 8GB internal storage with a microSD card slot offering an optional upgrade to 16GB memory, 5MP camera with autofocus and Carl Zeiss optics as well as 3G, WiFi and HSDPA connectivity.

Pricing on the Nokia N97 Mini Gold Edition smartphone has been set at $847 with Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East being the target markets, though no firm release date has been announced.

New Samsung TVs With Embedded Skype Software

Friday 26 February 2010 @ 6:09 am

New Samsung TVs With Embedded Skype Software

This morning, Samsung Electronics (SEO:005930) and Skye announced the launch of two new Samsung televesion sets, LED 7000 and LED 8000. The two new models will come an embedded copy of Skye software allowing channel surfers to make VOIP (Voice Over IP) calls. The service will be bi-directional allowing users to both make outgoing and well as receive incoming phone calls.

The integration of embedded software is a new trend that we are seeing in consumer electronics and for the buyer, this is probably a welcomed change as there is no longer a requirement to have to worry about external cable boxes, set-top boxes as well as messy cables to deal with.

The user interface on the new TV sets is expected to be just as user friendly and will be menu driven with an emphasis on simplicity. Using just the remote control, users will be able to perform all necessary functions including the creation of Skype accounts and if you have a FREETALK TV camera attached to the TV, you can also engage in video calls straight from your comfy sofa.

Samsung’s offering follows similar announcements made by both LG and Panasonic at CES 2010 in January.

Nintendo DSi XL US Launch Date Confirmed

Nintendo DSi XL US Launch Date Confirmed

Last year, we heard about Nintendo working on a new iteration of their portable dual screen game console called the DSi LL which was scheduled for only a limited Japanese launch with plans to eventually introduce the gaming console to new markets in the new year.

Well, that time has come. Announced yesterday at a media summit in San Francisco which had some of the hallmarks of the recent Apple media event where the iPad tablet PC was unveiled, Nintendo has confirmed that the Nintendo DSi XL release date for the US will be March 28, 2010.

The new device still comes with dual screens, but compared to the older model, the DSi XL has dual screens that measure 3.25-inch or a healthy 93% larger then the DSi lite. The big screens are expected to allow Nintendo to brand the new device in two ways, first as a social device, something that will attract nearby game players to come by and watch on the dual screens which have a generous viewing angle. Second, the DSi XL is expected to appeal to an older audience that still enjoys playing games but find that their vision may have deteriorated with age.

At the time of launch, the new system will be available in two color choices, burgundy and bronze and will include a larger pen-like stylus with a better comfort grip. The console will ship with Brain Age Express: Arts & Letters, Brain Age Express: Math and Photo Clock as well as Nintendo DSi Browser and Flipnote Studio.

Finally, the DSi will also perform part time duties as a e-book reader with 100 Classic Books available in June for $19.95. However, Nintendo was quick to point out that they are not trying to capture the book market from the likes of the Apple iPad or Amazon Kindle but rather, the purpose of adding a book reader to their gaming unit was to offer “just one more way to enjoy your device.”

Retail price of the Nintendo DSi XL on launch will be $190 US.

MSI’s Motion-Sensing Air Keyboard — Great For Home Theater PC’s

Friday 26 February 2010 @ 6:09 am

MSI's Motion-Sensing Air Keyboard -- Great For Home Theater PC's

Micro-Star International (TPE:2377) has unveiled their motion-sensing Air Keyboard, a wireless keyboard best suited for home theater PC’s. It’s basically a wireless keyboard that connects via a USB dongle, good for a range of 50 meters, and comes with a game pad and gyroscopic sensors for navigation.

The keyboard is mini-QWERTY, and measures 14.2 inches wide, 8.8 inches deep, and 3.3 inches high. It was originally introduced by Cideko last year, but will be co-branded with MSI when it lands in Germany next month. It’s powered by two AA batteries, providing 50 hours of use so a pair of rechargeable batteries would probably be a good investment. At this point, it’s only compatible with Windows (from 98SE up) and Mac OS X (10.2 and up).

What’s nifty about the MSI Air Keyboard is its gyroscopic sensors meant for navigation, which reminds users of the Wii.

Pricing and availability information might leave most people wanting, though — it sells for approximately US$107, but plans are only set for a Germany release. Neither MSI nor Cideko has any plans for releases in other parts of the world at this point, and we’re standing by for more information.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 Coming Sooner Than Expected

Friday 26 February 2010 @ 6:09 am

Super Mario Galaxy 2 Coming Sooner Than Expected

Nintendo fans are watching and waiting for Super Mario Galaxy 2 to come out, and before yesterday were expecting to buy the game this Christmas or early next year. This was expected, since Nintendo did take its time developing their best, most-awaited games. But Nintendo dropped a bomb when it announced that Super Mario Galaxy — as well as another highly-anticipated Wii game — will be coming much earlier than expected.

Nintendo has announced that Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Metroid: Other M will be coming out “mid-year.” That likely means we’ll be seeing a Summer release for both games — much earlier than most of us could even hope for.

What about the new Zelda game? No word on that game yet, although here’s to hoping it’ll come out in the same window as the new Mario and Metroid games. Nintendo will very likely have more news about the games this week, so let’s hope more details will be available by then.

Any other games you’re waiting for? Let’s hear them!

Best Buy Amongst Others To Carry Apple iPad

Best Buy Amongst Others To Carry Apple iPad

A recent comment from Tim Cook, Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) COO has confirmed that plans call for the Apple iPad to be available at Best Buy (NYSE:BBY) as well as other Apple partner retailers. The sales plan expects to see a short honeymoon period where the sale of the Apple iPad will be restricted to Apple’s online store. This will allow them time to shore up their sales process as well as allow Apple fans time to familiarize themselves with the new Apple product.

Once the honeymoon is over and the marketing campaigns are in full swing, Best Buy will begin to carry the iPad, which really shouldn’t be much of a surprise, after all, they do carry other Apple products.

It’s not clear at this time if Best Buy will be required to maintain a specific sale price or if they will have some discretion available to them. It’s also not known if the iPad will be sold by itself or if Best Buy will try and entice customers by bundling iPad accessories such as a free case.

3 Microsoft Entry Level BlueTrack Mice Launched

3 Microsoft Entry Level BlueTrack Mice Launched

Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) has launched three new pointing devices that are priced under $30 and include a BlueTrack sensor that allows them to work on unusual surface areas including glass.

Of the three new releases, two are wireless mice while the last one is a wired mouse. The first of the three is the Wireless Mobile Mouse 3500, a mouse that comes with a small form factor, something that would be well suited for the netbook or notepad user. The 3500 is a three button scroll mouse that features an ambidextrous design with rubberized grips on the sides of the peripheral device. The unit also comes with a USB nano transceiver that works off of RF signals and should offer about 8 months of up time before recharging is required. This mouse is available in two colors, “Dragon Fruit Pink” and “Loch Ness Gray”.

Second on the list is the full sized Wireless Mouse 2000 that is slightly larger then the 3500 and comes with a tilting scroll wheel. It to comes with the Nano USB Transceiver.

Last on the list is the Comfort Mouse 4500 which is the only wired mouse out of Microsoft’s offerings for today. Unlike the previous two mice that offered mobility, this USB mouse with five customizable buttons has been developed for the stationary user who doesn’t want to fiddle with replacing batteries. The 4500 is available in “Poppy Red”, “Sea Blue”, “Strawberry Pink” and plain old fashion black although I would have preferred to have seen a catchy name like “stealth black”.

Both wireless mice will be available for $29.95 and the wired mouse will retail for $24.95.

Windows Phone 7 Devices Coming In 3 Flavors

Thursday 25 February 2010 @ 4:54 am

Windows Phone 7 Devices Coming In 3 Flavors

A recent podcast by two Microsoft employees in Australia have revealed further information about Windows Phone 7, Microsoft’s mobile operating system that was recently announced at the Mobile World Congress. There used to be a time when Windows Mobile could be accommodated in virtually any handset, but with WP7, it appears that there will be much more stringent controls over it’s distribution.

From what it appears, there will be three different chassis specifications being considered. The first hardware design was displayed at the MWC and consists of a large capacitive touchscreen display (800×480 pixel resolution) and a 1GHz processor chip which we suspect will most likely be a Qualcomm Snapdragon. It will also include an accelerometer, GPS, FM radio and a 5 megapixel digital camera. There will also be a dedicated graphics chip that will be needed to handle the onscreen activity.

Chassis two is expected to be like the first chassis, but in addition to the features described above, it will also include a slide out full QWERTY keyboard. On the other hand, chassis three, the last of the hardware designs will most likely adopt the candy bar form factor although specifics of this version are not clear at this time.

Although the new classifications will mean less variety amongst Windows based handsets, it will make the life of application developers much easier as there is less variance that needs to be accounted for and addressed.

Custom Titanium iPhone 3GS Case

Thursday 25 February 2010 @ 4:54 am

Custom Titanium iPhone 3GS Case

We’ve seen many Apple iPhone mods and most of the ones that we’ve seen have consisted of encasing the Apple device in precious metals and gems and with it comes the hefty price tag that can only be afforded by the ultra rich.

Martin Schrotz is another Apple user who wasn’t overly satisfied with the way that is iPhone 3GS looked. He decided to take things into his own hands and design a new look for his iPhone.

The custom design took several months to complete and consisted of digitally measuring the original case before setting out to use CAD to design his new case. His initial plan called for using aluminum for the case but this didn’t work well at all.

Subsequently, he moved on to a special titanium alloy which worked considerably better as it was RF transparent and didn’t negatively affect signal strength. At no time during this process did he have to dismantle his iPhone to finish his custom mod.

I think he’s developed a cool mod, one that I’d be interested in myself. There is no indication as to whether he would consider offering his services to others.

Augmented Reality App With Facial Recognition

Thursday 25 February 2010 @ 4:54 am

iPhone Augmented Reality App With Facial Recognition

A mobile software firm by the name of The Astonishing Tribe is developing an application called Recognizr that makes use of facial recognition and cloud servers to identify people.

The application is still in the development stage, but once completed, users would download the app and install it on their mobile device. Then, if you meet someone on the street and want to know more about them, you’d only have to take a picture. The application would search it’s photo database and if a perfect match is found, personal information about the individual is returned. The type of information returned includes social networking sites that this person is a member of and in some cases, even personal phone numbers.

There are going to be personal privacy issues raised with this type of an application, but before people panic and begin removing their pictures from social sites such as Twitter and Facebook, it should be pointed out that this is an opt-in service. You will need to subscribe to their service as well as upload a personal picture and short biography that can be used by Recognizr. The application is expected to work with both the Apple iPhone and Android devices.

Bell Mobile TV Apple iPhone App Available

Thursday 25 February 2010 @ 4:54 am

Bell Mobile TV Apple iPhone App Available

It has become a sign of the times that mobile customers are in search of services that offer digital TV streaming on their handheld devices. With that in mind, Bell Mobility has announced their new Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone application called Mobile TV. The application which is available for download through the iTunes Canada website offers Bell Mobility customers the opportunity of enjoying live TV programming.

The TV channel offerings consist of CBC, CTV, Muchmusic, Treehouse, TSN, SportsNet, Live NHL hockey and the Weather Network to name just a few.

The application is a free download and is available in both English and French. It is worth noting that anyone can download the application. However, the mobile TV service will only work with the Bell 3G network or put another way, it will only work for Bell customers. If you happen to not be a Bell subscriber, you will be granted access to the free preview category. Additionally, as this application uses the 3G network, it has been designed to work with the Apple iPhone and the minimum requirements are iPhone OS 3.0 or greater. Sorry, but iPod Touch users are out of luck.

Finally, accessing Mobile TV requires that WiFi be turned off. The service costs $8 in monthly fees plus data charges which if you’re not careful can really add up.

Samsung’s New HMX-U20 Pocket Video Recorder Shoots At Full HD

Thursday 25 February 2010 @ 4:54 am

Samsung's New HMX-U20 Pocket Video Recorder Shoots At Full HD

Samsung’s HMX-U20 HD pocket video recorder is a new slim-line model has enough goods packed under its hood to deliver optical zoom and full HD recording — it’s enough to make other pocket camcorder makers rethink their own offerings.

Before the HMX-U20 HD pocket camcorder was announced, the preferred slim video recorder was probably Sanyo’s Xacti — but the HMX-U20 has everything it takes to steal the Xacti’s thunder. It shoots an impressive 1080p at 30fps, and shoots 10-megapixel stills. You’ll also have an HDMI port to work with, to see your shots and videos on your flatscreen.

The HMX-U20 also has a 2-inch LCD screen at the back, and has the option of shooting time-lapse photos.

You can get your own HMX-U20 this Spring at a price tag of $249.99, but if you want to save $20, you can opt for the HMX-U15 variant instead. The HMX-U15 can capture stills of up to 14 megapixels, but won’t have the optical zoom. Not sure whether the $20 is worth the tradeoff, but the prices MAY change before the release date.

Sony Wants Their Own 3D Digicam Offering Soon

Sony Wants Their Own 3D Digicam Offering Soon

Everywhere these days, we’re seeing the emergence of 3D technology — in PC’s, in professional cameras, in HDTV’s, in gaming consoles, etc. It really is the technology of the next few years — which leaves Sony (NYSE:SNE) itching to come up with their own 3D digital camera offering very soon.

Masashi Imamura, group president for Sony’s Personal Imaging and Sound Business, recently expressed their plans to compete with 3D digital cameras emerging in the market, the likes of which include Fujifilm’s Real 3D W1. It’s worth noting that Sony is already deep into 3D consumer camera development, although it’s likely the first 3D camera to roll off its presses will be a DSLR.

Imamura also claimed during the interview that Sony will continue to partner with Carl Zeiss when it comes to the lenses for their mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. Should be good news for fans of Sony’s cameras.

At this point, though, there’s no way of knowing when the next Sony camera will hit store shelves, as well as whether the camera is going to be a mirrorless Carl Zeiss-lens camera or a simpler point-and-shoot 3D camera. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Youtube Ends IE6 Support March 13th

Youtube Ends IE6 Support March 13th

The Internet can be a dynamic place where new innovations and technologies are being developed and introduced regularly. With the rapid change observed, all of the large players are continually releasing new versions of their Internet browsers that can correctly render web pages successfully.

From that standpoint, it only makes sense to perform browser updates as they become available. However there may be reasons why some refuse to upgrade their browser for whatever reason. Certain companies that haven’t tested all of their intranet web pages on modern browsers still cling to old browser technology.

Effective March 13th, Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) will be forcing the hands of many to upgrade to a newer browser as they have announced that from that date on, YouTube will no longer support Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 6. From that day onwards, visit YouTube with IE6 and you’ll be greeted with the message:

On March 13, we are dropping support for your browser. You’ll still be able to watch videos after that date, but new features may not work properly

Users will also be provided with alternatives for newer browser versions from the leading providers of browser technology. The options recommended include Firefox 3.6, Google Chrome 4, Internet Explorer 8, Safari 4, and Opera 10.

The changes being implemented are not a surprise as Google did advise Internet users that change was coming, with many believing that the reason for the change had to do with Chinese hackers using a security vulnerability in IE6 to attack the search engine giant.

IE6 is not the only old browser being singled out by Google as support for older versions of Google Chrome, Apple Safari and Mozilla Firefox will also be ending.

SanDisk G3 Solid State Drives Now Shipping

SanDisk G3 Solid State Drives Now Shipping

SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ:SNDK), well known in the IT industry for their flash memory cards has announced the shipping of their SanDisk G3 SSD (solid state drives) to both North American and European markets. The drives are considered to be a viable alternative to the traditional 7200 RPM (revolutions per minute) hard disk drives and are available in two drive sizes, 60GB and 120GB.

The drives have been developed for with long term reliability in mind, the 120GB drive estimated to be capable of having 80 terabytes (TB) of data written to it over a lifetime of regular use. The drives make use of ExtremeFFSTM technology, a flash management system that improves the endurance of the drive in personal computers powered by the Microsoft operating systems of Windows 7 and Windows XP. The new drives also support a read/write speed of 220MB/sec and 120MB/sec respectively.

It’s expected that in the coming years, solid state drives will replace hard disk drives as the absence of moving parts reduces support costs by making the drives less susceptible to shock damage and mechanical failure.

The SanDisk G3 60GB drive retail for $229.99 while the 120GB drive is $399.99. The drives will also come with SanDisk’s 10 year limited warranty and are Windows 7 certified and compatible with Linux , Apple Mac OS X Snow Leopard as well as Windows XP and Vista.
