Product: Sound System Model S
Manufacturer: GenevaLab
Wired Rating: 8
If looks could kill, Geneva’s latest sound dock would be on trial for murder in the first.
Between the lacquered finish, mod design lines and luscious aluminum stand, the tabletop dock-clock is certainly the best-looking “accessory” we’ve ever coaxed into the bedroom.
Called the S model (S is for small), the minimalist device also features an integrated backlit display that turns on when you touch the dock. It’s certainly not the banging-est system on the planet; a $500 home theater in a box will better serve to rock your casbah. But for what’s essentially a 6×9-inch boombox with two 3-inch speakers, the better-than-average clarity, dynamic range and reasonable presence make Geneva’s tiniest system a tempting buy, especially since it outperformed the pricier Yamaha TSX-130 combo dock we tested a few months back.
If you’re serious space saver who cares about aesthetics, then purchasing an S dock is actually a pretty sound decision.
WIRED Almost as loud as Liberace’s wardrobe (definitely cheaper). Chrome pedestal helps reduce reflection (i.e. music sounds better when dock’s on the stand). Motorized dock cover automatically closes when iPod is removed.
TIRED Travelphobic: At seven pounds, this sucker’s a pain to relocate, let alone tote. Death of physical media: no CD player! Slight but noticeable sound reflection when not sitting on the stand. Figuring out how to set the alarm requires reading the manual.

Fans of RC airplanes and helicopters are going to love this new add-on — the rest of us probably won’t be so thrilled. It’s the Quanum RTR Bomb System, a “bomb” add-on that fits nicely under your RC toy. With a special mechanism that lets the “bomb” split open and release its payload upon impact, it should be enough to close a few airports if enough RC enthusiasts get their hands on it.
Kidding, really, but as long as you play with this new toy alone, away from civilization and policemen, it should be pretty fun. The bomb is made of fiber-reinforced nylon, making it good for several drops. Filling it with water or powder should mimic a good explosion and make for a good practical joke on your friends — provided the bomb doesn’t drop directly on their heads, that is.
I’d advise RC enthusiasts to think twice about getting this $17 toy. There have already been forecasts of increased terrorist activity this year, and you don’t want to get arrested for owning something that looks remotely threatening.

RC Helicopter Bomb A Little Early For April Fool’s |
Kids Stuff | Post tags: r/c, toys

I think we’ve written before about a cellphone prototype that runs on Coke (or any sugary water). We already have the technology to make such powered systems last longer than some traditional battery powered devices, so I guess it was only a matter of time before we saw it come to RC toys, like the Tomy Ene Pocket RC.
Buying (or at least recharging) batteries has always been a sore point for RC toys, and the idea of using soda and juice just might interest some doting parents. It should also be a good way of using up the extra soda and juice as the whole family goes into a low-glycemic diet. (Sugar is bad, mmkay.)
Of course, using sugar-water as an energy source brings its own parental concerns. For one, can you really trust your kids not to spill any grape juice when pouring it into their toys? We know just how tough juice stains are to remove from carpet, especially if it is grape juice. Also, are you really willing to encourage having more sugary drinks in the cupboard? That sort of thing.
The Tomy Ene Pocket RC is still in the works, so it’ll be a while before we can see just how well juice serves as, well, juice for RC toys.

OLED displays are very quickly becoming the norm these days, and the race is on to create the biggest displays for residential and commercial use. Next month, Mitsubishi will be unveiling the largest OLED display yet — at 149 inches.
Mitsubishi’s offering is basically a billboard measuring 3264 by 1920 mm. Amsterdam will be the first city to see it in action, at the ISE-2010 trade show due in a matter of weeks. It was only a few months since Mitsubishi showcased their concept for a giant billboard screen using grids of 10×10cm OLED panels.
Sure, the technology can be called cheating. But since this is an advertising billboard, people will be viewing the display from a distance, and the bezels won’t be so obvious (coupled with OLED technology, it shouldn’t be a problem at all). The technology also allows the panels to be arranged into most shapes, even curved configurations.
Mitsubishi’s massive OLED display won’t likely be making its way to living rooms, but we will see them in malls and other commercial areas. Time to get rid of those neon signs!

You may remember the luxury Canadian mobile handset maker Mobiado for some of their earlier mobile phone designs that feature a touch of bling. It turns out the that phone maker is back with an all new design in the Mobiado Classic 712AZF.
Like some of their other phones, the new design blends technology with a touch of luxury. From a hardware standpoint, the Mobiado phone includes all of the usual features that you would expect to see in a smartphone including a 5 megapixel digital camera that is capable of both still photography and video, a 2.2-inch QVGA display, integrated a-GPS, email and web browsing support as well as tri-band WCDMA and Quad-band GSM/EDGE.
What makes the phone stand out in the crowd is how it is decked out. The Mobiado Classic includes glimmering sapphire crystals on its outer surface while the phone frame itself is fashioned out of anodized aluminium which should help to reduce the risk of nicks and dings. Add to this a selection button made from a sapphire crystal and CNC machine engraved Mobiado logo on the back and you’ve got a pretty good looking phone.
Pricing information is not available, but we do know that you’ll have six colors to select from including red, black satin, gray, black, blue and silver.

Razer is known for their gaming gadgets that try to improve the whole gaming experience. Take for example, the case of the Razer Vespula, their latest mouse mat. This mat, has your back covered whether you like it soft or rough.
The Razer Vespula is a dual sided mousepad with one side having a textured surface while the other being smooth. During game play, if your preference is for more accurate fine control with tactile feedback, you’ll want to use the textured surface of the mousepad, whereas if you are in a fast paced action game that requires speed and quick movements, you’ll want to flip the mousepad over and use the smooth side.
The Razer Vespula does have one more feature up its sleeve and that would be the addition of a soft gel filled wrist pad. The wrist rest helps to reduces stress and fatigue as well as protect your wrist from possible injury, allowing you to enjoy an extended gaming session in comfort. The wrist rest also comes with memory conformance.
The new Razer mousepad is priced at $34.99.

The Apple iPad continues the tradition of it’s predecessors, the iPhone and the iTouch in its lack of support for Adobe Flash. There are two main reasons for Apple’s decision in this matter and these would include the inherent security risks posed by Flash, not to mention that this application can overtax system resources, resulting in a system freeze or crash. The problem is, Adobe Flash is an important application and a key component of many video games and digital video streaming sites such as YouTube (who by the way are moving towards HTML5).
Naturally, Adobe is not pleased with this decision and have announced a workaround for the lack of Flash support in Apple gadgets. The workaround consists of enabling Flash developers the ability to package their digital content directly into apps through the use of the Packager for iPhone application which will be bundled into Flash Pro CS5.
The initial release of this Adobe software will not allow Flash developers to take advantage of the larger screen size afforded by the iPad, but Adobe has indicated that support for this will also come down the road.

Adobe Flash Workaround For Apple iPad |
Apple News | Post tags: Adobe, Apple

The Apple iPad may have been the big news of the day yesterday, but Apple has also made a couple of other announcements that are quite interesting, one of them being the release of a new iPhone SDK update.
Version 3.2 of the developer SDK makes a change that many will look forward to and that is the lifting of the restrictions which prevented 3G VoIP (Voice Over IP) calls. Prior to this announcement, the only option available to iPhone users was to make VoIP calls over a WiFi network connection.
It’s a good change that not only benefits iPhone users but also users that purchase the new Jesus tablet which includes speakers, a microphone, WiFi, 3G and apps although it would look a bit strange to be holding a super-sized tablet to your ear.
iCall is the first app available for Apple gadgets that can take advantage of the new feature and can be used to make 3G VoIP calls. However this change will affect the entire wireless industry and it’s only a matter of time before we see other players update their software applications to support this as well. How about Skype over 3G?

The Nokia X6, with its 32GB capacity, has been around for a while, and has enjoyed a fair amount of popularity amongst smartphone users. But Nokia apparently realized they were missing out on a critical piece of the market, and has recently made the announcement that a 16GB X6 handset was in the works.
The 16GB version will come in four color schemes (not three as previously speculated), and won’t be bundled with the Comes With Music download service. But on the upside, the 16GB X6 will still have a 5-MP camera with dual LED flash and a Carl Zeiss lens. Users can edit their videos on the phone itself, which also has a dedicated output for watching videos on TV.
Similar to the 32GB version, the X6 16GB will include Ovi Maps support for pedestrians and drivers and Lonely Planet and Michelin guides access. Users will also enjoy preloaded video games such as Spore, DJ Mix Tour, and Asphalt4.
Nokia has announced that the X6 16GB will start shipping in winter this year, all over the world. Still no word on the pricing, although we’re sure it’ll be easier to reach than the 32GB model.

Maintaining a mobile device can be pretty tricky for those watching their budgets these days. The majority of the plans offered in the market today are post-paid, and many post-paid options come at ridiculous prices and even more ridiculous data plans. Will Verizon be offering a better option with the pre-paid solutions it’s currently working on?
Verizon is currently developing pre-paid options for their customers, and there are rumors that the RIM BlackBerry devices will play an important part of the new campaign. A pre-paid plan would be quite interesting to see, and should give those tired of post-paid plans a more cost-effective way to stay wired.
Rumor has it that Verizon’s BlackBerry pre-paid plans will be about $35, not to shabby, and that the hardware cost will range full retail price and a carrier-subsidized one.
There isn’t any word as to when Verizon will be offering this service either. Everything’s rather still up in the air at this point. We’ll stay on the story as it develops over the next several months.

I was told once that gamers see their gaming systems the same way roadsters see their cars — every extra dollar spent on enhancements is a dollar well-spent. And when it comes to processors, hardcore gamers will be more than willing to shell out $500 or more for Intel’s latest, greatest processors. Where does that leave the rest of us?
We love games too, but the idea of paying $500 for a processor that’s only going to be obsolete in a year or so is a little foreign. Thankfully, our part of the market is well-covered by one of Intel’s main rival, AMD, whose current campaign is all about offering fast processing speeds at a fraction of Intel’s price.
Case in point — the Phenom II X2 555 Black Edition, a dual-core processor recently released by AMD. It’s currently AMD’s fastest dual-core processor, offering a clock speed of about 3.2 GHz. That’s a speed that opens up a LOT of options for gamers who are just a few steps short of “hardcore.”
The best part about AMD’s processors is that even their fastest ones, such as the 555 Black Edition, can be yours for only $99. I doubt Intel can offer that kind of speed at anywhere near that price. If sacrificing a little processing power for a wad of saved cash sounds good to you, then AMD may be your saving grace.

I’m sure most of us find dogs irresistible — they follow us wherever they go. Now, toy company Mattel is creating a bit of irony with one of their latest products, “Puppy Tweets,” a device that attaches to your dog’s collar and Tweets their every move. So, basically, now you can follow your dog, too.
Basically, Puppy Tweets keeps track of your dog’s movements, and when it recognizes certain behaviors, it’ll post a tweet to your dog’s Twitter account. (Of course, you’ll have to set up the account yourself.) If your dog is barking a lot, you’ll probably get a tweet like, “Some days you just gotta get your bark on!” You get the idea.
Mattel’s marketing director Susan Russo says Puppy Tweets will merge two popular trends — social media and people’s love for their dogs. I’m sure dog lovers will like the idea of knowing exactly where their pets are and what they’re doing.
For the rest of us, though, I’m sure we’ll be okay with our dogs following us wherever we go, not the other way around and with the rambling sneakers, now everyone can follow your every footstep.

Mattel Gives Dogs A Way To Tweet |

Product: Space Heaters
Manufacturer: Roundup:
Wired Rating: 0
Your abode is nippier than a yorkiepoo, and you’re actually considering a Snuggie. Try a space heater instead. We put four through hell to see how they held up under fire.
1. De’Longhi Mica Panel
Along with passive convection heating for lasting coziness, this unit has an infrared panel that radiates an almost instant beam of life-giving warmth. Our test-room temperature shot up 4 degrees in 30 minutes. Just 2 inches thick and weighing a mere 11 pounds, the Mica can be mounted on a wall to keep its piping hot grille away from little fingers and paws. We preferred to slap on the wheels and drag it around the house like an IV.
WIRED Sleek Italian design. Convenient carrying handle. Cuts off if knocked over. Mostly silent operation. Frost-prevention mode keeps the mercury above 41 degrees when you’re out.
TIRED Not programmable — you choose from six presets. Clicking noise when it cycles on and off could wake light sleepers.
$90, Delonghi.com

2. Dimplex Sahara Electric Fireplace
This faux fireplace hangs on your wall like a painting. Flick the remote and real-looking flames leap from the triple-toned sand — instant ambience for your bachelorette pad. But the warmth actually comes from an electric coil inside the 28 x 40-inch aluminum and steel frame. With the fan, it can make a large room toasty in 40 minutes (though the whooshing sound could be a mood killer). Choose your location wisely; at about 60 pounds, it doesn’t move easily.
WIRED Eye-pleasing style. No floor clutter. You can enjoy the fake fire sans heat.
TIRED Controls hidden on bottom. Thermostat can’t be preset; you click a dial when ideal hotness is reached — easy to forget when frolicking in your flame-licked lair.
$600, Dimplex.com

3. Lasko Ceramic Tower Heater
The lap of luxury comes cheap when you’ve got the Lasko Tower Heater. Imagine this scenario: You wake up, hit Snooze, and program the perfect clime from the snugness of your bed — so getting out of it 20 minutes later is downright pleasant. As the ceramic plates inside the tower heat up, a fan pushes hot air out the front; an optional oscillating action spreads the gladness to all bodies in the vicinity.
WIRED Flexible timer can be set to turn off in one to seven hours. Electronic display indicates when set temperature is achieved.
TIRED Fan noise. Settings are in 5-degree intervals, from 60 to 85, but sometimes you just want a perfect 72 degrees, dammit.
$60, Laskoproducts.com

4. Sunbeam Low Profile Heater
The Low Profile is aptly named; measuring about a foot high and 7 inches front to back, it tucks away nicely against a baseboard. Like the De’Longhi, it has no fan, so there’s no noise, no stirring up dust, and no messing with a room’s moisture content. The trade-off is that you don’t get the immediate thaw offered by the other models on this page.
WIRED EcoSmart mode is pretty clever: It toggles between 1,500 and 750 watts to save power while providing steady heat throughout the day.
TIRED Timer options are limited to four, eight, and 12 hours. Keep an eye on dogs, cats, and rug rats — the metal shell sizzles. Our test unit flatlined after half a day; fortunately, Sunbeam provides a one-year warranty.
$60, Sunbeam.com

Product: Rush
Manufacturer: Polaris
Wired Rating: 0
Whether you’re out for a leisurely snow-jaunt or a ditch- banging frost-maul, you want to see the backcountry from your snowmobile, not feel it. The engineers at Polaris have your back — literally. Five years in development, the new Polaris Rush is a terrain-tamer that melds stunning beauty and beastlike performance. The motocross-inspired rear suspension adjusts its response to the conditions, deploying a soft touch to make little bumps disappear and pushing back with more than enough stiffness in the big stuff to keep you from bottoming out and losing control. Even the rigid chassis itself is built to soak up vibration before it reaches your spine. Throw in a liquid-cooled 600-cc engine — which musters 120 snow-throwing hell horses — and a completely modular front end designed to keep its skis planted come ice, slush, or powder, and you’ve got a sled that’ll handle everything from IronDog to SnowCross to the next ice age.
Product: Location-Aware Smartphones
Manufacturer: Roundup:
Wired Rating: 0
Stand-alone GPS unit, your days are numbered. With sensitive receivers, powerful nav apps, and maps and traffic info over cell networks, location-aware smartphones now lead the way.
1. Motorola Droid
If you need persuading to drop your dedicated nav unit for a smartphone, just pick up a Droid and launch Google Maps Navigation. The simple, intuitive app makes you feel like a native while you’re braving foreign lands. Plug in a destination and the software — free on Android 2.0 phones — downloads the appropriate maps. You can add layers like restaurants, gas stations, and parking garages, and if you prefer the long way ’round, call up a list of alternate paths.
WIRED Don’t know the address of the eatery and only sort of know the name? Just enter your best guess and choose from a list of possibilities. Directions for driving, public transit, or walking. Voice commands let you keep hands at 10 and 2.
TIRED Turn-by-turn directions sound like a robot. Bad enunciation transforms “Murray Street” into “Myrrh Street,” which can be maddening when you’re lost.
$200, Motorola.com

2. TomTom for iPhone
When users can get decent navigation apps for free, you’d better have some good reasons to charge big bucks for add-ons. TomTom offers a few (though not enough): The dock boosts the iPhone’s GPS sensitivity, and the abundant voice choices make directions easy to understand. Plus, the dock’s speaker amplifies directives and works as a thumpin’ hands-free. Unfortunately, the strength of the audio isn’t complemented by the detail of the instructions: When you hear only “Turn right ahead,” it’s hard to know what to do unless you look at the screen.
WIRED Maps are stored in the iPhone’s flash memory, so directions are available even when reception isn’t.
TIRED No way to select a scenic route. Ludicrously expensive.
$99 and up (phone), $120 (dock), $100 (app), TomTom.com

3. Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition
Ostensibly very serious about telling you where to go, this little number comes with preloaded US maps, a suction-cup mount, and free turn-by-turn directions for life. But don’t toss your nav system yet. Sure, it’s a snap to plan a route on the PC application and beam it to the phone, but it’s a lot harder to figure out which way to go when you’re already out in the field: The touchscreen is about as sensitive as a hit man, and if you don’t know your destination address, your best bets are either a cumbersome point-of-interest menu or booting up the phone’s Web browser to search for your finish line.
WIRED Lead foot? The 5800 can warn you when you’ve exceeded the speed limit. Unlocked phone works on any GSM network. Nav app free with phone.
TIRED Drive over or under a highway and it thinks you’ve suddenly teleported to that road.
$250, Nokia.com

Finally, it’s official. Apple has announced their new tablet computer and it’s official name is the Apple iPad. The announcement was made this morning by Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs at an Apple event being held in San Francisco, California.
For those that are already familiar with the iPhone and iTouch, it won’t be much of a transition to the iPad as it has the feel of other Apple gadgets. The iPad is roughly the size of a hardcover book, with a 9.7-inch multitouch sensitive screen.
The new device will include a flash drive that will have a storage capacity of 16GB, 32GB or 64GB. It will also have wireless functionality through Bluetooth technology as well as WiFi and as was reported yesterday, the iPad will be able to run all iPhone applications. Apple has done a good job in including a long lasting battery in their new tablet, one that is rated for 10 hours of continual video playback use and in excess of a month in standby time.
As to be expected, it also comes with the Apple Safari web browser pre-installed and similar to other tablet computers currently available on the market, it can perform pretty much the same tasks such as reading ebooks, surfing the internet, writing emails using the QWERTY virtual keyboard as well as playing music and video files.

The timing of the Archos Tablet leak seems a bit interesting in light of Apple’s media event today. Earlier today, details of a new Archos Tablet appeared on an online UK retailer site which was promptly removed shortly thereafter.

The new tablet looks quite similar to an earlier tablet, the Archos 5 which featured 800×480 pixel resolution, the main difference being the Archos 7 comes with a bigger screen, a 7-inch display screen to be exact.
Like it’s smaller brother, the Archos 7 will be powered by Google Android but because it does not meet all of the necessary hardware requirements imposed by Google, the Archos 7 will not have access to some Adroid features such as the Android Marketplace. Although there are online hacks available to enable some features, this is not mainstream knowledge and can potentially effect the sale of these units.
Outside of this, the Archos 7 will also include 8GB of internal storage, a webcam and will have measurements of 203×107×12mm. There are no details in today’s leak about the processor that will power this tablet.

In The Geek World, ColorWare is well known for adding a touch of individuality to your collection of gadgets and gizmos. They do this through custom paint jobs that they offer for select devices. In the past, they have worked with such items as the PS3 Slim and the BlackBerry Bold 9700.
They are back at it, offering to turn their art palette towards your Google Nexus One. There are two offerings available. First is that you send them your Google phone along with $195 and you’ll get your phone back three weeks later all decked out in your customized colors. The second option is to buy an unlocked Google phone through ColorWare which includes the custom paint job. Price for this option is $810.
In terms of work done, there are four areas of the Google smartphone that lend itself to customization. These areas are the back, bottom, frame as well as the area surrounding the camera lens itself. Along with the payment, you will need to tell ColorWare your preferred colors for your new decked out phone and you can select between 21 metallic colors, 21 solid colors and 4 pearl colors and if this isn’t enough of a color selection, there is even the opportunity to have a custom color used. In addition to color choice, two finishing options are available, a gloss finish or soft touch finish.

Back in September, we heard about Project Pink, a Windows powered Microsoft smartphone that was under development by the Redmond giant.
Rumors of Project Pink or the Zune phone have just grown a lot stronger after Microsoft released version 4.2.202.0 desktop software update for their Zune MP3 player yesterday. Although there is no official Microsoft announcement or press release to confirm these findings, it was discovered that post upgrade, buried in the Zune.inf file located at C:\Program Files\Zune\Drivers\Zune, there are lines of code listed as “%Phone.DeviceDesc%”, amongst others.
An even closer inspection of the code shows that there are 3 unique class IDs or product ids which would suggest that there are potentially 3 new Zune phones in the works rather then a Zune phone with just different storage capacities. This would lend some credence to the findings of September 2009, at which time it was believed that more then one Zune phone was being developed. At that time, the phones were codenamed Turtle and Dove.
Next month between February 15-18th in Barcelona, Spain, we have the Mobile World Congress being held. Perhaps, Microsoft will offer more details about the Zune phone at time. The Apple iPhone has always been strong in the market and with the Google Nexus making inroads, it would seem that Microsoft would need to announce something sooner rather then later.

MSI has launched the Wind U135 netbook with an Intel Pine Trail processor. The new netbook, considered to be a special edition was launched by the company to “commemorate” a special occasion for MSI, namely that the company has successfully sold millions of MSI netbooks.
In addition to featuring the newer Intel processor in lieu of the Intel Atom N270, the Wind U135 also includes a 10-inch screen display with a standard resolution of 1024×600, 1GB DDR2 memory, 160GB hard drive (with optional upgrade to 250GB), Intel
GMA 3150 integrated graphics as well as a 1.3MP webcam. The MSI netbook is powered by Microsoft’s Windows 7 Starter Edition.
Some of the interesting features of the netbook are a chicklet style keyboard that includes keyboard keys that are 20% larger then those found on a standard keyboard. For a netbook that comes with a small form factor, this should be a welcome addition. MSI has also added a larger touchpad as well as added a “color film printed case” that not only prevents the device from accumulating smudges and fingerprint marks, but also gives the netbook that overall glossy look and feel.
To round out the features of MSI’s new offering, the U135 also includes 3 USB 2.0 data ports, a 4 in 1 card reader, wireless 802.11 b/g/n network connectivity and an optional 6 cell battery which offers 7.5 hours of uptime.
The MSI U135 retails for under $330 from your favorite consumer electronics outlet.

We know there are real geeks and nerds out that take updating their Twitter stream or other social networking very seriously, take for example the bride and groom that twittered during their wedding ceremony. For these few, every moment of one’s life can be found on their Twitter stream. Literally every second of their life can be on Twitter so long as they have a live internet connection. The only part that might not be available are the individual foot steps that they take, that is until now.

Rambler Sneakers will take care of that. These informal shoes have a built in sensor that provide real time updates for each and every step you take. The shoes interface through a Bluetooth connection with the wearers cell phone to provide the Twitter updates. The Twitter account for the shoe designer who created this geek design is certainly not one of the most interesting profiles to follow, all you’ll see is “tap” when the user is wearing the shoes and walking around and when he isn’t moving, you’ll see dots (.). The shoes do sound a lot like the radio collars used with animals to track their movements.

Under $30, $29.97 USD to be exact and you can pick up your own Boogie Board LCD writing tablet. With the impending Apple announcements of tomorrow, the Boogie Board may get lost in the shuffle, but it does have some interesting features that are worth mentioning.
First, the writing area of the tablet utilizes a pressure-sensitive Reflex LCD, a technology which offers the device not only flexibility but also resistance towards impacts and collisions. Hence, you’ve got yourself a durable little tablet here.
Additionally, because of the bi-stable and reflective nature of the Relfex LCD, the Boogie Board tablet does not need an external power source to either create an image or retain it. Also, a small internal watch battery that is rated for 50,000 erase cycles is all that is required to clear the screen of any content that might be there.
The Boogie Board Tablet is the design of Kent Displays. We may not quite be a paperless society yet, but this device can certainly reduce paper consumption and is a suitable gadget for note taking, drawing pictures, playing games, writing down thoughts and ideas and for list generation.

LCD screen technology has seen significant improvements over the years and it appears that there are no signs of progress slowing down as a Japanese company, Zeon, has developed a film for the polarizing plates found in LCD screens.
The new film, called phase difference film, makes use of Cyclo Olefin Polymer making it ideal for LCD panels that rely upon IPS technology (In Plane Switching). With the new technology, screen contrast is said to improve by a factor of ten times and marked improvements in the viewing angle are also noticeable. Phase Difference Film is said to work by preventing light diffusion from the backlight resulting in a clearer picture and better signal quality.
Several popular LCD display vendors such as Panasonic and Hitachi already employ IPS technology in their screens which means that they will directly benefit from Zeon’s Phase Difference Film. Zeon currently offers the technology to Samsung whose screens are designed upon vertical alignment technology and later this year, the technology will be mass produced and offered to LCD TV manufacturers for their screens that measure 40-inches and above.

Even though some things may seem like commonsense, there are still government laws in place to ensure that there is no misunderstanding as to what is considered acceptable behavior and what is not. For that reason, we have rules that prohibit drinking and driving and in some countries, there are now new laws being adopted to make it a violation to use a cell phone while driving a car.
For the bike, do we really need a rule that states no reading text books or your favorite novel while riding on the bike? With the development of the Performance Book Caddy, it would seem so or we’ll end up with a few more recipients of the Darwin Awards. The Performance Book Caddy is a book holder that mounts on the handlebars of “any road, mountain or stationary bike.”
Stationary bikes, I get, but road and mountain bike? This bike gadget will run you $15 not counting the bill for the ambulance ride and the visit to the emergency ward.

We’re only a day away from Apple’s “Come See Our Latest Creation” media event being held in San Francisco, California and today, we’re getting some of the strongest indications of possible features to be included in the new Apple Tablet (iSlate/iTablet/iPad).
According to the New York Times, Apple’s new tablet computer will include WiFi and 3G network connectivity, a 10-inch screen display and full compatibility with iPhone applications. The exact quote is as follows:
It will run all the applications of the iPhone and iPod Touch, have a persistent wireless connection over 3G cellphone networks and Wi-Fi, and will be built with a 10-inch color display, allowing newspapers, magazines and book publishers to deliver their products with an eye to the design that had grabbed readers in print.
There we go, this will probably be the closest we will come to a confirmation until the live event begins at the Yerba Buena Center center at 10 AM Pacific tomorrow. With the information received from the NYT, there is a whole new sleuth of questions that arise such as who will be the carrier, AT&T, Verizon or possibly both. Would AT&T even want or be offered the opportunity of being the sole carrier considering the AT&T news that came out yesterday? We’re looking forward to tomorrows announcements.

Sure, it’s great to have GPS and other wayfinding Apps on your smartphone just waiting to help you get your bearings in a strange new place. But what if you’re traveling on vacation, and would like to stay away from all the text and voice messages, e-mails, phone calls, and video games? Good thing the Map2 paper map is gaining popularity.

Map2 is basically a paper map — the same kind you used back when cellphones were only good for calls, text messaging, and the occasional game of Snake. What’s cool about Map2 is that it has its built-in “zoom” function. The map is divided into four quadrants, and if you want to “zoom” into one of the quadrants, just unfold that portion of the map to reveal a more detailed illustration of the quadrant.
I know, it’s not really technology. But it’s instant 2x zoom — how many maps can do that? Map2 is currently gaining popularity in London, where it’s now being offered. It’s a simple, ingenious way to keep from getting lost when you’re on vacation, and for only $13 a piece, it’s likely going to catch on all over the world one day.

Since the early 20th century, people have been enthralled by the adventures of Superman. Other high-flying superheroes made it to mainstream popularity soon after, and people began to love the idea of being able to fly over town. While it seems an impossibility today, NASA seems intent on opening the door to single-person flight.
Enter the Puffin, NASA’s prototype of a single-person, experimental, electric aircraft. It’s basically a machine that fits one person, and uses propellers to lift off and provide thrust for forward flight. Sure, people can fly using jet packs, but the Puffin has a cockpit and is assumed to be much safer.
The offerings are impressive for a prototype. It only has a tenth of the noise produced by a helicopter, has a range of about 50 miles, and can fly at 300 miles per hour. NASA engineers say the range can triple in seven years.
Of course, it’s not on the market yet, and no one really knows when it becomes cheap enough (and maybe safe enough) for ordinary people to use. When it does come out, though, I’m sure it’ll have a cooler name.

It’s not the best smartphone camera out there, but the iPhone’s camera is pretty good at taking close-up photos. Now a new App, iMicroscope, takes things to the next level by letting you take high-quality microscopic images. Sadly, you’ll need a microscope to make it work.

iMicroscope is a great App for science aficionados, letting you take pictures of the microscopic world with the help of your microscope. The App works by aligning the iPhone’s camera lens with a desktop microscope’s viewfinder. The results are quite impressive, and it has options to adjust the intensity of the magnification.
Is it compatible with ALL microscopes? The iMicroscope’s creator states that his App “works with any optical microscope which is compatible with human eyes.” The “human eyes” part is funny, I mean, would you design microscopes for the use of dogs, cats, or… Oh, I get it. Lab rats.
The iMicroscope currently sells for US$2.99 at the App Store. Just remember that to put the App to best use, you’ll need to have a microscope lying around, too.

You’ve probably heard how Berkeley Bionics, now Lockheed, is currently working on the HULC, or Human Universal Load Carrier. The HULC is a robotic exoskeleton used by soldiers on the field, and it transfers the load from the soldier’s backpack directly to the ground instead of the soldier’s back. Its main problem is that Li-on batteries tend to run out of power after a mere few hours.
Recently, Lockheed has come up with an upgrade. It’s now working on an HULC model that’s powered by fuel cells, which means it can go on for days if necessary. It’ll also have power sockets to power other electronic devices even in the middle of the battlefield.
What’s great about the HULC is that it lets soldiers carry up to 200 pounds of weight without sacrificing mobility. The upgrade should let special squadrons operate deep into enemy territory for extended missions, without worrying too much about how to lug around so much gear.
It’ll be interesting to see how the HULC and other weapons in development will turn the tide in the War on Terror. Lets hope the guys at Washington are wise enough to do their job, too.

What’s in a name? A good toy with lots of gadget reviews will take you quite far, but if you have a catchy name, that is something that will stick in the minds of many and can potentially seal the deal for those sitting on the fence. This is exactly the case with Kandle Light, an ebook reader light.

Today’s ebook readers that use eInk screen technology do not include any sort of backlight. This of course makes reading in low lighting conditions a bit of a challenge and in some cases, you just may be forced to turn on the bedside light if you want to keep reading.
A few crafty people have created their own do it yourself book lights and Kandle Light, which is available through Amazon is one example of this. Kandle Light comes with double pivoting arms and 2 LED lights so that you can keep reading that novel in the dark. Thanks to the WideLip grip, the device is compatible with a number of commercial book readers including the Kindle and the Sony Reader.
I wonder if it will work with the Apple Tablet that may get announced this week?

Acer, now the world’s second largest PC vendor has outlined their 2010 plans in an effort to grow their bottom line even further. 2010 will be a busy year for the Taiwanese company that plans to launch several new projects including a tablet, a Chrome netbook, an E-Reader and an app store.
The coming Acer application store is expected to feature hundreds of different applications based on a variety of different operating systems including Microsoft’s Windows and Windows Mobile as well as Google’s Android and Chrome OS. Acer is anticipating that the available applications will be free or low cost and will run on a variety of different Acer hardware configurations for smartphones and netbooks.
The E-book reader is another project slated for a June launch date in five European markets. Although details are sketchy, the Asus reader will have a 6-inch monochrome display and join an already busy E-book reader market that is dominated by the likes of Barnes & Noble Nook, Sony Reader and Amazon Kindle.
A Chrome OS powered netbook is also promised by Acer to retail in Q3 2010 and there is some talk that this Acer netbook may have dual boot functionality with Chrome and possibly a Windows based operating system.
The final big project for this year is their Acer Tablet which they hope will compete well with Apple’s Tablet that is expected to be announced shortly. According to Jim Wong, president of IT Products for Acer, the Apple tablet will “provide inspiration” for their own tablet design.

You may remember it was a week ago when Rogers Mobility stopped HTC Dream sales due to a problem with 911 calls failing when the GPS was enabled. The workaround at the time was to disable GPS service until such time as a permanent fix for this serious issue was available. Needless to say, Rogers customers were not pleased by this news as GPS service is a popular function on smartphones these days.
A week after the announcement of the 911 flaw, Rogers Mobility and HTC have released a software update for this pressing issue. The fix is mandatory for all HTC Dream and Magic users with Rogers Mobility. The official announcement from Rogers was as follow:
A mandatory software update is now available for Rogers HTC Dream and Magic customers to ensure 911 calls can be completed on these devices. These customers need to go immediately to http://www.rogers.com/dreamsoftwareupdate or http://www.rogers.com/magicsoftwareupdate on a PC to download the update. Users of Windows 7 or Macintosh will need to call 1-888-Rogers1 for update instructions. Customers will need to backup any personal items before the update process.
Rogers did recognize the inconvenience that this problem has caused for its subscriber base and as a courtesy gesture, has offered to compensate their affected subscribers with a credit for one month of data fees. Magic users will also be pleased to hear that this mandatory upgrade includes a new Sense UI that supports multitouch functionality.

The Yuneec e430 is a two seater electric plane that’s been in the air for about six months now and will be available for sale in about a years time. Assuming Yuneec can deliver on their promise, their new plane could vastly improve air travel especially when it comes to private planes.
As an electric plane, the e430 requires the equivalent of only $2 per hour of flight time in energy use and a significantly lower maintenance cost when compared to traditional gas guzzling airplanes. Other advantages of this new aviation technology include a whisper quiet engine, reduced emissions which is great for the environment and a 25:1 glide ratio which means that it can glide 25 feet in the forward direction for every one foot drop in elevation. The higher glide ratio gives the pilot more time to find a suitable landing spot.
Cost for the two seater planer will be about $89,000.

The Google Nexus One had quite a few features that smartphone users were interested in, one of them being its speech recognition and speech to text service. Say anything into your mobile phone and it will be converted into text, at least that is the theory.
Reuters recently tested the speech to text feature on the Google phone and discovered that not all speech is converted into text. Foul language and curse words for instance are not transcribed as spoken but are instead censored and replaced with pound (#) signs.
In other words, in a private conversation with a friend, you may say something inappropriate but the text will come out as “##### want to go for a #### drink?”
As to why Google elected to add this feature, a spokewoman did say:
We filter potentially offensive or inappropriate results because we want to avoid situations whereby we might misrecognize a spoken query and return profanity when, in fact, the user said something completely innocent
Google isn’t the first and probably won’t be the last to filter bad language, Microsoft had done something similar with their Zune HD Twitter application but in that case, the Redmond company did indicate that a future Microsoft patch would address this.
