Secret Service Wireless Invisible Headset

Finally released to the public, the Secret Service grade Invisible Headset is the ultimate spy gadget communications tool for extreme covert communications operations. This is the smallest device of its kind. The micro-sized earbud is smaller than a hearing aid which fits snugly and securely in the ear canal. A small invisible thread allows safe removal after use. The wireless transmission is completely silent and automatically picked up by the micro-earbud from the transmission necklace. The invisible headset is the worlds smallest device anywhere without the need to take an impression of the ear canal.

How it Works
All you need is a cell phone and an assistant to carry a conversation, or just listen to the audio from the earbud which can be wirelessly attached to a cell phone or any device with an audio output jack. Right before the event, put the micro spy earpiece in your ear and wear the transmitter coil necklace around your neck, under your clothes within a few feet from the micro ear bud.

Make a call from your cell phone and a friend or associate should be on the other end of the phone, talking to you with whatever information you need. You will be able to instantly provide dates, names, numbers, instructions, stock quotes or any relevant information from your assistant. You will be a human encyclopedia, without anyone ever knowing how you do it.

Sound Clarity
The sound clarity offers superior quality for speech applications and is guaranteed to be free of excessive noise suitable enough to listen to music. more info

Motorola’s Backflip Will Make You Come Unhinged

Tuesday 9 March 2010 @ 8:58 pm

Product: Backflip Smartphone

Manufacturer: Motorola

Wired Rating: 5

It’s about time Motorola did something crazy. The Cliq was predictably sleek. The Droid was pragmatically chunky. But AT&T’s new Backflip is just … odd.

At first glance the touchscreen channels the Cliq, but flipping it over reveals an exposed QWERTY keyboard. The phone opens like a reverse clamshell, and once you swing the keyboard around through 180 degrees, it’s facing you, resting beneath the screen. And, get this — hidden away on the back of the touchscreen is a small navigational touchpad (called the “Backtrack”) used for scrolling and selecting menu items.

Of course, this odd design choice inspired a slew of questions around the office: “Won’t the exposed keyboard type in your pocket?” (No.) “Will it snap if you open it the wrong way?” (Absolutely.) “Wait, so that touchie-nippley thing is on the back? Why?!” (We don’t know either.)

At 4.7 ounces it has a satisfying pocket weight, and its slightly cramped 3.1-inch touchscreen — though not as vibrant as other phones — is mostly responsive. We were able to squeeze out 320 minutes of talk time, while also tinkering with the usual multimedia and productivity accoutrements (music, video, GPS, 3G/WiFi data, and mobile TV).

Despite its running an older version of Google’s Android OS (1.5), all the bread-and-butter phone features make cameos on the Backflip and perform as expected.

Unfortunately, even though this is AT&T’s first Android phone, it isn’t a blank canvas like the Nexus One or Droid. Like T-Mobile’s Cliq, the Backflip runs the Motoblur Android skin. This take on the Android OS eschews the standard, grid-like home screen in favor of a widget-based user interface. On the bright side, these widgets are customizable and run the gamut in terms of functionality: News, weather, search and a bevy of social networking sites are all fair game.

Unfortunately, running more than a handful of these widgets simultaneously proves problematic. Not only does the Backflip’s 528-MHz processor start to get sluggish, but the on-screen presentation of simultaneously updated feeds from Facebook/Twitter/E-mail/Text/Weather/RSS is of location-aware, real-time data. It’s just too much.

Motorola attempts to address this by offering multiple home screens (accessible via left- and right-finger whisks), but there’s only so much one can do with 3.1 inches.

Although hardly great at presenting data, the Backflip’s icon-driven interface does offer a silver lining. With the right widget combination (and savvy placement), we were able to get a snapshot of every social facet of our lives on one screen.

However, when a co-worker asked to borrow the phone, we were suddenly a bit reluctant to hand it over. Why? Because pretty much anyone who sees the home screen has access to the explosion of personal data spewing out there. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing (unless you have secrets to keep), but it perfectly underscores our issues with the Backflip. On top of its plodding performance, the phone only excels at serving one type of user: the mobile-tweeting, Facebook-feeding, geo-tagging oversharer.

Unless you fall into that category, it’s just not worth bending over backwards to use the Backflip.

WIRED Creative design balances style and function. MicroSD port lets you pack it full of tunes. Supports Android Marketplace for app downloads. QWERTY keys are large, easy to use. Beefy hinge keeps the phone from swinging around wildly. 5-MP camera (with flash!) takes decent pictures. Charges through micro-USB port.

TIRED One of the weakest Android offerings to date. Replaces Android’s Google search with Yahoo. Underpowered and responds at a glacial pace while multitasking. Filled with AT&T-branded bloatware. Flimsy battery door. Screen is too small for its icon-heavy UI.

Dell Precision M4500

Tuesday 9 March 2010 @ 8:58 pm

Dell Precision M4500

Late last year, Dell unveiled their M6500 which touted a 17-inch display. Though it could be considered a high performance machine, the challenge it had was with portability due to its 8.5lbs in weight.

Enter today the Precision M4500 which includes a choice of either the Intel Core i5 or Core i7 processor and for those those looking for a real performance edge, the Core i7-920XM Quad Core Extreme Edition. With that also comes your choice of either an NVIDIA Quadro FX 1800M or 880M graphics card that allows the 15.6-inch 16:9 widescreen display to support 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution with 100% color gamut.

Some of the other options on the M4500 include a 3MP webcam, a backlit keyboard with multitouch trackpad, Gobi 2.0 mobile broadband support and a 64GB SSD mini card that offers additional data storage space without the need of having to remove the optical drive.

Even with these features, the M4500 weighs in at 6lbs, a full 2.5lbs less then the M6500. Add to this a thickness of 1.1-inches and you’ve got a pretty attractive offering for either yourself or a mobile workforce, especially when you consider the availability of a 9 cell battery that can provide up to 7 hours, 40 minutes of power.

Pricing is expected to come in just shy of $1700 but that’s for the Core i5 entry level model. Expect it to go up appropriately depending upon optional hardware choices made.

Freescale Tablet Supports Android, Linux And Android OS

Freescale Tablet Supports Android, Linux And Android OS

At CES (Consumer Electronics Show) 2010, Freescale revealed their tablet pc that was in need of OEM partners. Priced at just $200, the device was squarely aimed at the low end of the tablet market and featured a 1GHz ARM processor, 512MB RAM, a 7-inch display screen with 1,024 x 600 pixel resolution and 4GB integrated storage that was expandable to 64GB using microSDHC cards. GPS, Bluetooth 2.1 and 802.11b/g/n WiFi were also going to be standard features with optional 3G/RF4CE available. Freescale also confirmed that touchscreen technology would be part of the final design as the demo models at CES made use of an external keyboard and mouse.

The hardware specifications may not allow the tablet to stand squarely against the Apple iPad, but for those looking for a barebones entry level tablet pc, this would be something to consider, especially with the $200 price tag.

We now get word today that the Freescale tablet will support three operating systems. They are an unnamed Linux OS, and two Google operating systems, the open-source Chromium OS and Google Android. Freescale is still looking for OEM partners to work with, so the earliest that we’ll see this tablet is possibly some time during the summer.

Sony 3D Glasses Get Priced

Tuesday 9 March 2010 @ 8:58 pm

Sony 3D Glasses Get Priced

Sony Electronics has confirmed the pricing for their 3D glasses as well as the infrared emitters. Hold on to your seat, a 3D upgrade package will run about $587 for a family of four. That’s a large sum of cash, especially if you are planning on buying latest 3D Sony television. Although Sony has just revealed their pricing, we had an inkling that it would be in this ballpark as the Samsung 3D HDTV glasses that were announced at the end of February were priced very similarly.

The emitter itself will go for about $55 while the TDG-BR100 and TDG-BR50 active shutter glasses are $133 individually. If you’re planning to purchase the Sony LX900 television that starts at the base price of $3900, you will receive a pair of “free” 3D glasses. The list price is not cheap but most of these companies are probably banking on 3D movies like Avatar to drive sales, that is of course unless you are in Korea and want to be treated to a 4D movie experience.

All kidding aside, TV manufacturers are in a unique position, at least for now where they can make money and significant sums of it with their peripheral devices. We can only hope that this is a temporary position or we could be faced with high prices similar to what we have seen with toner cartridges in the print industry for years now.

Google Search On Andoid Set-Top Boxes

Tuesday 9 March 2010 @ 8:58 pm

Google Search On Andoid Set-Top Boxes

Google search dominates the online search market and over the past few years, we’ve seen the search giant slowly expand into new areas of opportunity. The latest move sees a partnership with Google offering search features to Dish Network subscribers, allowing them to find TV shows and online video content from video sites such as YouTube.

The new Google service requires that subscribers have an Internet connected Android powered set top box with users being able to search for content using an included QWERTY keyboard. Currently, the testing phase is limited to a select few that consists of Google employees and their families.

There are so many advantages for Google to move into TV search. First is the set top boxes that run on Android, Google’s own operating system. This continues to expand their reach beyond smartphones and mobile devices such as the Google Nexus One.

The other big advantage is the introduction of Google search ads showing up next to popular TV shows. Dish Network is a large satellite provider and this in itself has the potential of generating new revenue streams, but if this was to grow beyond this market and into Android powered cable boxes as well, the increased ad revenue would certainly help Google’s bottom line.

Google is not the only player in this market as both Apple and Microsoft offer their own services that meld both TV and web content together.

Rumor: Microsoft Windows 7 SP1 In Q4

Tuesday 9 March 2010 @ 8:58 pm

Rumor: Microsoft Windows 7 SP1 In Q4

On a regular basis, Microsoft releases security patches, fixes or enhancements for their various operating systems. Less frequently, these changes are bundled together and released as a single service pack (SP).

Up until recently, it was generally accepted that SP1 for Windows 7, Microsoft’s latest operating system would not be released for some 24 months. However, TechARP.com, which in the past has been successful in determining XP and Vista SP release schedules has come across information indicating that the release date of Windows 7 SP1 will be advanced to Q4 of this year.

As to why Microsoft may have had a change of heart lies in the fact that the Redmond company needs to address an indeterminate number of “serious” performance bugs within Windows 7. Advancing the SP1 date to this year would put its release date in line with Vista and XP. XP SP1 was seen some 10 months after the XP launch in October 2001 while Vista SP1 came about 1 year after the Vista launch.

Windows 7 has seen strong sales reaching the milestone of 90 million licenses sold but the rumor of a Windows 7 SP1 later this year might get both enterprise customers and the average Joe to hold off temporarily in their purchase until they can get a copy of Windows 7 with SP1.

Olive FrvrOn Mobile Phone

Tuesday 9 March 2010 @ 8:58 pm

Olive FrvrOn Mobile Phone

Mobile phones are designed with a variety of different power sources. There are mobile devices that are solar powered, others like the Apple iPhone include a non-removable battery, while some come with a flat removable battery. There’s even a rather unusual mobile phone that can use the sugar in Coke as a power source.

The Olive FrvrOn V-G2300 mobile phone is a little different. The device is a dual power GSM mobile phone that functions with a rechargeable Li-ion battery. However, in a pinch when you’re out of battery power and let’s face it, all of us have been in this situation, the Olive FrvrOn can run on a standard AAA battery.

The new phone is being released in India only at this time. It certainly is a no frills mobile phone, you won’t be getting any advanced features typically seen with the higher end phones, but if you’re looking for a basic cheap phone, this one will run about $37.

The G2300 comes with a 1.5-inch CSTN color screen display with 128×128 pixel resolution and a white backlight. The phone includes both Hindi and English language support as well as an FM radio, calculator, alarm, calender and speaker phone. 16 polyphonic ringtones are also thrown in.

Ultra Thin Frameless Acer Notebook Being Developed

Tuesday 9 March 2010 @ 8:58 pm

Ultra Thin Frameless Acer Notebook Being Developed

Acer is looking to take notebook technology to a new level with a prototype design that is currently in the works. The new design is certainly a move away from the traditional laptop form factor and is expected to include a touch keyboard but more importantly, will be ultra thin due to some significant structural changes.

These days, hardware manufacturers are aware that consumers are looking for highly portable notebooks and with that in mind, notebook designs are generally quite thin. Acer will look to make them even thinner with it’s new frameless design which if everything goes according to plan would be available in Q2 2010.

The new design would use specially adapted Corning’s reinforced glass substrate with printed color on its rear surface to act as the notebook cover. For Acer, the value comes in form of savings in materials used and the hope would be that at least a portion of these savings would be passed on to the consumer in the form of cheaper notebooks. At the very least though, consumers would have access to a new level of portability both in terms of size and weight with a frameless Acer notebook. We’ll see how this story develops in the coming months and will report back on any hardware specifications once they become available.

Fake Intel Core i7-920 Processors Shipped By New Egg

Fake Intel Core i7-920 Processors Shipped By New Egg

New Egg, the second largest online retailer within the United States finds themselves in the midst of a controversy due to them shipping fake Intel Core i7-920 processors to some online customers.

The findings come about after Hard OCP was sent one of the counterfeit Intel processors. The packaging which housed the fake goods could pass as genuine with just a quick glance. However, upon closer inspection, misspelled words on the packaging were apparent.

Once unboxed, further evidence was present including a fake cooling fan, an instruction manual that consisted of blank pages stapled together and “piece of plastic that looked vaguely like a chip.” Software companies have always been plagued with counterfeit products because it much simpler and cheaper to duplicate software.

Hardware technology is another fish all together because the technology to duplicate microprocessors is very expensive. What’s more common is processor chips that are deliberately relabeled as a faster processor and subsequently sold for top dollars.

It’s being reported that New Egg purchased some 300 fake processors through D&H Distributing. Intel and New Egg are currently investigating the matter and those consumers that may have received a fake processor are having them replaced with legitimate items.

Vers Audio Wood Finished iPad Case

Monday 8 March 2010 @ 7:20 pm

Vers Audio Wood Finished iPad Case

Vers Audio can almost be considered as the IKEA of the gadget world, the big difference being that with most Vers products, assembly is not required. Past creations from Vers have included handcrafted wooden casings for alarm clocks, iPods and of course their specialty, audio speakers.

This time around, with the April 3rd US release date imminent, Vers has set their site on the Apple iPad. The Vers iPad case is handcrafted from solid hardwood and bamboo and features reinforced steel, offering an extra level of protection from accidental external bumps and nicks while the iPad resides on a soft scratch resistant internal lining.

In many ways, the case design does give the Apple tablet that wooden digital picture frame appearance. The Vers case is also top loading allowing for the easy insertion and removal of the iPad. There are also appropriately placed openings for both the volume control and the 30-pin connector.

Optionally, there’s also a wooden stand offering the ability to type on an external keyboard or go hands free while watching your favorite movie.

The Vers wood iPad case will retail for $79.99.

Energizer Duo USB Battery Charger Contains Backdoor Trojan

Monday 8 March 2010 @ 7:20 pm

Energizer Duo USB Battery Charger Contains Backdoor Trojan

Energizer DUO which has now been discontinued, is a USB battery charger that first made its way into US, European and Latin American markets back in 2007. At the time of sale, the Energizer charger came with a software bundle that offered status information about a battery recharge that may be in progress.

On Friday, the Department of Homeland Security’s US-CERT (United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team) released an advisory for this product as it would appear that the bundled software included malicious code that infected computers with a backdoor Trojan horse.

Once the trojan installed it’s payload (Arucer.dll), the infected file would reside on a Windows computer, listening on TCP port 7777 for instructions. The trojan is self-executing on Windows boot up and has the ability to download and execute files, tweak registry settings, as well as forward stolen information from an infected computer.

The recommended course of action at this time is to uninstall the infected software as well as to delete Arucer.dll. A full virus scan would also be prudent. Energizer has advised that this issue only affects workstations powered by the Windows operating system and that the Mac version appears unaffected.

Though it is not known how this trojan managed to get into the bundled software, Energizer is cooperating with federal law enforcement agencies to investigate further.

Apple iPad Ad During Academy Awards

Apple iPad Ad During Academy Awards

There are certain events during the year that garner a large viewing audience and if you have a product launch or message that you want to ensure reaches the largest number of eyeballs and you have deep pockets, these are the golden opportunities.

Google did this with their Parisian Love ad that aired during the Superbowl last month. This month, it’s Apple’s turn using the 2010 Academy Awards as their center stage.

Apple’s new ad about the iPad was seen just after the Disney/Pixar animated film “Up” was recognized with the Best Animated Film award. In the 30 second ad spot that aired to the background music of The Blue Van – There Goes My Love, Apple confirmed the April 3rd US launch date to which we can add that pre-orders for the WiFi version will start on March 12th (US again) with the 3G version will be available later in April.

It was a typical Apple ad, similar in pattern to what we’ve seen the company use in the past with success when they launched their iPod product line. The ad was simple, using no verbal sales pitch, but rather just showed a person using the iPad, demonstrating some of its features while music played in the background.

Ultraportable LG X300 Announced

LG has a new offering in the highly portable X300 that will be available in a variety of global markets shortly. The new device sports an 11.6-inch screen display and is less then an inch (0.69-inches) in thickness.

In terms of its hardware configuration, the X300 will come with 2GB RAM and includes 128GB of storage space by way of a SSD (Solid State Drive). The unit is also powered by an Intel processor, namely the 2GHz Menlow CPU (Atom Z550). Rounding out the features is the inclusion of integrated 3G support and though not referenced by Engadget, it is suspected that wireless 801.11 b/g (and possibly n) will be included.

Expect to see the LG X300 in South America, Asia the Middle East some time this month with possible European and US launch dates to be announced at a later time. Pricing is also expected to vary from country to country. The price in the Korean market will be $1,424 and I suspect those in other markets can use this price point as a gauge for when the X300 arrives in your specific market.

Google Chrome Business Edition In 2011

Google Chrome Business Edition In 2011

With operating systems, it’s not uncommon to have different versions of an OS, each having unique features that may benefit one user group over another. Microsoft is well known for doing this with their OS, creating a home version, enterprise version and a variety of other flavors in between to accommodate their user base.

Version one of Google Chrome OS isn’t even officially out yet, but the word from the RSA Conference held recently points to Google [GOOG] developing a Business Edition of Google Chrome, which will be in addition to their “Home Edition”.

The Business Edition is not expected to launch any earlier then 2011 and will be for netbooks only, at least at the time of launch. Few details are available about the new Google OS other then the presence of additional security features and “more management muscle”, which are features one would expect in a professional operating system.

Google Chrome Business Edition has a long way to go before it poses a serious challenge to Windows 7 Professional, but this is the starting point from which to build and develop.

Apple iKey To Replace Door Keys One Day?

Monday 8 March 2010 @ 7:20 pm

Apple iKey To Replace Door Keys One Day?

A recent patent application has been unveiled revealing Apple’s plan to replace traditional door locks with an electronic device. The conceptual idea is being coined as the iKey and thoughts are that one day perhaps, a single “electronic key” would be required to unlock all doors for which you have access, be it a front door, office door, car door, etc.

Essentially, doors could be retrofitted with an electronic device or alternatively, as part of the product design phase, this electronic device could be installed. Access control would then be based upon a personal identification number or PIN code with the transmitted digital information being encrypted to avoid the risk of signal theft.

The speculation is the next generation iPhone will contain this capability. The official application with the US Patent Office states:

The device can communicate with an external device to open a lock. By way of example, the electronic device may be a model of an iPhone.

The external device may be any suitable electronic device such as a portable media player, personal data assistant or electronic lock that may be used to access a door, car, house or other physical area.

The Apple proposal would make use of Near Field Communication technology which allows two nearby electronic devices to exchange necessary information.

The idea of a keyless entry system isn’t new, security access cards used in office environments are quite common. We are also starting to see the major car manufacturers deploy versions of this new technology in their new vehicles as well.

Apple’s hope is to have the iKey replace as many of these keyless systems making it so that consumers would only have to carry a single device for all locks. You just have to wonder what the backup plan would be if your Apple iPhone malfunctioned.

Touchscreens make everything better and more intuitive, right?

Not so fast: Sometimes adding touchscreen technology has drawbacks that seriously outweigh the benefits. Exhibit A: the Sony Reader Daily Edition.

It’s an e-book reader that, like most others currently on the market, uses an E Ink screen. Unfortunately, while E Ink on its own is crisp and readable — not to mention easy on the batteries — it has a lower contrast ratio than the LCD screens most of us stare into all day long. But when you add a layer of touch-sensitive technology on top of the virtual ink, as Sony has done, the contrast ratio gets even worse, and the screen goes from pleasingly Etch-a-Sketch-like to downright murky and gray.

Another problem: Sony uses resistive-touchscreen tech, not the capacitive sensors used in most modern smartphones. That means it takes some real pressure to get the screen to respond. Combine that with E Ink’s slow refresh rate (it can take several seconds for the screen to respond to a command) and you need Zenlike equanimity, or catatonic levels of lethargy, to use the thing without flying into a frustrated rage.

It could be we’re just so jacked up from a steady diet of Twitter, Facebook and Google Buzz updates that we’re unable to grok the Reader’s slower, more contemplative pace.

Apart from the touchscreen, the Sony Reader Daily Edition has a lot going for it. Its 7-inch screen is bigger than the 6-inch display found on the Amazon Kindle and the Barnes & Noble Nook. While an inch doesn’t sound like much, it translates into substantially more real estate — and a very usable “landscape” view that puts two pages side by side.

The Reader’s hardware is stylish, with a clean, conservative design and an attractive, leather-like flip cover. It is easily the most attractive e-book reader we’ve seen yet, and it’s a marked contrast to the Kindle’s Speak-n-Spell aesthetic.

Built-in 3G wireless (from AT&T) means you can browse, purchase and download books without having to sync with a computer. It also supports one of the features Sony most eagerly touts, namely the ability to subscribe to newspapers like the Wall Street Journal and the New York Post. A WSJ subscription costs $15 for four weeks. Once you’ve subscribed, each day’s paper is automatically downloaded to the device every morning.

For that to work, though, you have to leave the wireless turned on (there’s a handy switch at the bottom for turning it on and off). Unfortunately, while the Reader’s battery lasted more than a week with the wireless off, it ran down in less than a weekend when we left the wireless on. In other words, if you want to have the morning paper waiting for you when you wake up each day, you’d better leave wireless on and plan on plugging the device into the wall for a recharge every day or so.

Overall, while we like the looks of the Sony Reader Daily Edition, we find it hard to recommend it. The touchscreen’s downsides, the device’s high price and the fact that a slew of new e-reader technologies are just around the corner make a strong case against buying it now. If Sony improves the screen and continues to polish the interface, they might just have a winner in version 2.0.

WIRED Gorgeous industrial design puts other e-readers to shame. Larger screen than on most e-readers. Built-in dictionary. Subscription support might help keep some of our favorite newspapers alive another day or two.

TIRED Screen is even lower contrast than other E Ink displays. Touchscreen should be called “press-screen,” because you have to apply significant pressure to get it to respond. Store is poorly organized and slow. Interface makes it difficult to find some features. Wireless quickly drains the battery. Steep price compared to other e-readers.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 Laid To Rest

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 Laid To Rest

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 is no longer with us, having been read its final rights and laid to rest last night in a solemn funeral ceremony arranged by the Denver Company Aten Design Group.

The web browser seemed so young at 8 years of age, but you have to remember that time travels at the speed of light on the net, so really, this web browser was well past its prime.

The parent (Microsoft) of this web browser was unable to personally attend its offspring’s funeral but sent a bouquet of flowers along with a card that read:

Thanks for the good times IE6, see you all @ MIX when we show a little piece of IE Heaven.

The Internet Explorer Team @ Microsoft

Apparent cause of death was a “a workplace injury sustained at the headquarters of Google, Inc.” which does sound like a contract hit was planned on IE6. Of course, the death of this old browser could be attributed to Google phasing out support with YouTube confirming that March 13th is the drop date for IE6.

What’s really sad though is that despite the funeral arrangements and the demise of IE6, it’s still going to be around for a while as there are many enterprise clients that rely on this archaic browser when more modern alternatives are available.

NVIDIA Video Driver Version 196.75 Has Major Issues

Saturday 6 March 2010 @ 4:34 pm

NVIDIA Video Driver Version 196.75 Has Major Issues

If you’re the owner of an NVIDIA graphics card and an early adopter, electing to upgrade your video driver to WHQL-certified version 196.75, you’ll want to quickly downgrade to the stable version 196.21 before doing permanent damage to your video card.

The newest drivers are no longer available through the Nvidia website due to multiple reports about video card failures. It’s believed that the latest driver version has erroneously affected the control settings resulting in fan failures that can be attributed to the fans either not spinning at all or spinning at the incorrect speed. Without proper cooling, the GPU (graphics processing unit) is susceptible to overheating and permanent damage. Another symptom consumers are reporting is the unexpected shutdown or freezing of their personal computers.

What’s really interesting is that video gamers playing any one of the games Warcraft 3, World of Warcraft or StarCraft 2 Beta seem to be even more prone to this risk. Blizzard Entertainment has also acknowledged the problem, recommending users to uninstall this driver version and revert back to the earlier driver.

So far, the video cards that seem affected are the 8800GT, 8800GTS, 9800GT, 9800GTX, 9800GTX+ and the GTS 250.

Android Developers Get Adobe Photoshop.com Mobile Editor

Saturday 6 March 2010 @ 4:34 pm

Android Developers Get Adobe Photoshop.com Mobile Editor

Adobe’s Photoshop.com Mobile has seen a few developments over the past few months, first being released as a free photo editor for the Apple iPhone and subsequently being ported to Android phones in November of last year.

Building on this technology, Adobe has announced today the availability of a new Photoshop mobile editor that allows third party software developers to add Photoshop functionality into their software applications, thereby allowing for easier image editing.

As part of the press release, Doug Mack, vice president and general manager of Digital Imaging and Rich Media Solutions took the opportunity to take a shot at Apple stating:

Unlike iPhone, the Android platform allows us to make the Photoshop.com editor broadly available to developers so they can provide it within any application they are working on. Photoshop functionality can then easily be accessed from an online auction, real estate or social media application so users can quickly fix photos and make them look their best, before being showcased.

You have to hope that Apple and Adobe can sort out their problems because Adobe Photoshop is one of the best, if not the best, photo editor available and it’s a shame that Apple is placing restrictions on it’s availability, though they have stated their rationale for it.

Photoshop.com Mobile for Android 1.1 also comes with a few new photo effects such as pop art and vibrant colors. Also included with this offering are soft black, white and warm vintage tools which can be used to give pictures that vintage or aged appearance.

Interested? The new app is available as a free download through the Android Market.

Rugged Red Wings Make Us Want to Re-Boot

Friday 5 March 2010 @ 3:30 pm

Product: Beckman Style 9010

Manufacturer: Red Wing

Wired Rating: 8

There are really two ways to go about building a boot. You can go the sneaker-meets-Gortex route found in kicks like the Kayland Zephyrs. That’s fine if you want to hike up Mt. Whitney. But what if you need a pair of boots that can be worn with a tie? Then you should strap on something like Red Wing’s Beckman 9010s.

Even though Williamsburg lumberjack-chic hipsters will never truly put these guys to the test, the 9010s are built to withstand some harsh conditions. Constructed from thick leather, rubber and even a little bit of wood, they’ve been treated and sealed to keep the elements out and keep heat in. We trudged through a myriad of winter conditions — hail, rain, bitter (for California) cold, and all the while our tootsies remained toasty.

This is in part due to the thick wool socks we had to wear with the boots. The 9010s have two problems: almost zero cushioning in the sole and harsh stiffness out of the package. We solved the first problem with some Dr. Scholl’s inserts. The second? We had to break in the boots with extreme prejudice.

It took, we’re not kidding, two months to get the 9010s broken in. And while it wasn’t always easy (blisters and sore arches), the payoff was amazing. After applying ample amounts of boot oil — but mostly just walking long distances — we were treated to footwear that feels like sneakers, but are tougher than a pair of cinder blocks.

WIRED Clint Eastwood levels of ruggedness. Boots you can wear while trudging through rain and muck or to a board meeting. Wear and tear only makes ‘em better.

TIRED Boy, you’re gonna carry that weight: a shade under 2 pounds. Do not wear these things if you need to run fast or walk silently.

Twitter Boasts 10 Billion Tweets

Twitter Boasts 10 Billion Tweets

McDonalds may use the tagline “Billions and billions served” and Apple iTunes recently laid claim to 10 billion downloads through and now, the social networking site Twitter has now joined this exclusive club with their announcement of reaching the 10,000,000,000 tweet milestone.

It’s believed the 10 billionth tweet was sent out at around 1AM GMT this morning and comes some five months after Twitter reached the five billion tweet mark. Since their inception in 2009, the micro-blogging site has been a force in real time search with the three big search engines eager to integrate Twitter feeds into their search results.

According to GigaTweet, Twitter will maintain its pace of growth with estimates indicating that the 11 billionth tweet is only about 20 days away and that another 200 days from now is when we can expect Twitter to reach the 20 billion Tweet mark.

Unlike the Apple iTunes 10 billionth download where we had specifics, the same cannot be said about the 10 billionth tweet because the Twitter user has a protected feed. However, for you’re viewing pleasure is the 9,999,999,999 tweet.

RoSS Simulator Lets Doctors Practice Using Da Vinci Surgical Robot

Friday 5 March 2010 @ 3:30 pm

RoSS Simulator Lets Doctors Practice Using Da Vinci Surgical Robot

If you haven’t heard of the Da Vinci surgical robot, it’s probably only the most amazing surgical machine ever developed for the field of medicine. It’s still pretty expensive, so it’s rolling out to surgical wards all over the world very slowly. As a result, doctors are hard-pressed to find the time and resources to practice using it. That’s where the RoSS Simulator comes in.

The RoSS simulator is a stand-alone simulator that lets doctors receive the necessary training to operate the Da Vinci surgical robot — without actually using the robot itself. This ultimately means drastically lower training costs for hospitals and other surgical facilities, and any establishment lucky enough to have a Da Vinci surgical robot won’t have to deal with doctors bickering about whether to use the device for training or for actual surgical procedures.

It’s great to see science benefiting the medical world like this. Soon there may come a time when robotic tools will dominate most surgical procedures done in medical establishments, minimizing costly errors and maximizing efficiency.

Western Digital Reveals SiliconEdge Blue SSD

Friday 5 March 2010 @ 3:30 pm

Western Digital Reveals SiliconEdge Blue SSD

Western Digital has officially entered the solid-state drive market with its newest offering, the SiliconEdge Blue. This is a 2.5-inch SATA II drive that’s primarily designed to improve disk performance for notebook PC’s and gaming desktop machines. So far, we’re liking what we’re seeing.

The SiliconEdge Blue has what it takes to deliver. It’s considerably faster than most SSD’s with a peak read speed of 250MB per second, as well as a peak write speed of 170MB/sec. It also passes the US military standards (810F) when it comes to its resistance to impacts and stresses, making it much more reliable than any rotating drive.

The SiliconEdge Blue also has built-in native command queuing. Windows users will get to enjoy TRIM support, allowing the drive to run at its top speed longer.

The SiliconEdge Blue comes in 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB models, costing $279, $529, and $999 respectively. Western Digital also has a slightly slower offering on the market, the SiliconDrive N1x — although it’s more likely meant for vehicles and servers instead of personal computers, since there hasn’t been a public price announced for it yet.

Foxconn Leak Dispels Rumors Of iPad Shortage

Foxconn Leak Dispels Rumors Of iPad Shortage

Rumors have been going around lately of an iPad shortage this month. Some say a certain glitch in production risks delaying the launch date, and may even create shortages later in the year. But if a leak from Foxconn’s own part suppliers is to be believed, we’ll still be seeing at least 600,000 iPads this month, plus a million more in April.

But even then, a delay shouldn’t be too surprising — after all, it’s not as easy to manufacture tablet PC displays than displays for, say, notebooks and mobile devices. In addition to the need for stronger glass, the iPad also needs to make sure its relatively-large 9.7-inch screen doesn’t become a problem in the long run.

Still, this piece of news does little to dispel the rumored shortage. After all, news of the shortage ARE rumors — and this bit of news from Foxconn is allegedly a leak. I’m not really sure a rumor can cancel out another rumor.

It could be that the person who started the rumor was short-selling AAPL, or it’s simply one of Apple’s marketing ploys to heighten demand before the actual release. Stay tuned, I guess we’ll find out shortly.

Microsoft Windows 7 – 90 Million Licenses Sold

Friday 5 March 2010 @ 3:30 pm

Microsoft Windows 7 - 90 Million Licenses Sold

Windows Vista was supposed to be the successor to Windows XP but because of the issues with the new OS, some perceived and some real, this never materialized with adoption rates lower then expected.

With Windows 7, Microsoft had a lot to prove, both to itself, but more importantly to Microsoft customers and shareholders and with the numbers that are now being reported, Windows 7 can be considered a success. At the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media, & Telecom Conference in San Francisco, Microsoft’s Chief Financial Officer, Peter Klein announced that 90 million copies of Windows 7 have been sold since its release date of October 22, 2009. That’s 90 million copies in just 4 months.

This makes Windows 7 the fastest selling operating system that the Redmond company has ever released and the numbers are expected to only improve as many corporate clients are only now looking at enterprise wide OS upgrades.

There’s no doubt that Microsoft worked hard at improving their product and correcting the mistakes with Vista. Windows 7 seems to be the natural progression from Windows XP with Vista looking more like a bump in the road, much like Windows ME.

Next on the Microsoft road map is Windows 8 which is expected to roll out in 2012. Naturally all eyes will be on Microsoft to see if they can once again exceed customer expectations, especially in light of the fact that Chrome OS, Google’s own operating system is coming.

Asus RT-N56U Ultra-Slim Wireless Router

Friday 5 March 2010 @ 3:30 pm

Asus RT-N56U Ultra-Slim Wireless Router

Wireless router technology hasn’t really changed all that much when it comes to form factor. Take a rectangular base, add a wireless antenna or two and you’re done.

Asus Router

However, all of this is about to change with the new Asus RT-N56U wireless router which was introduced at CeBIT. The Asus 802.11a/b/g/n router with dual band support can handle up to 300,000 concurrent sessions for stable and fast downloads, includes 2 USB ports for external hard drives, printers and other USB gadgets. It can also function as an FTP server, Samba server, BitTorrent server or printer share device. Finally, there are 4 Gigabit LAN ports and an integrated NAT firewall and DoS detection system.

However, the hardware specifications of the Asus RT-N56U are inconsequential. It’s the form factor that makes this router sing. It’s easily one of the most elegant designs I’ve come across, something that would look good sitting next to an AIO (All In One) computer with a wireless keyboard and mouse. All we need now is wireless power and we are set.

No word on release dates and pricing but this goes on the must have list.

More Blackberry Slider Photos Leaked

The Blackberry slider phone has been caught on camera again, this time in some high resolution pictures courtesy of bbleaks. The authenticity of the pictures can’t be validated so it’s unclear if this was a failed Blackberry prototype or a new model that is on it’s way.

However, these are the best pictures available right now and you can clearly make out the hardware QWERTY keyboard as well as the presence of a large screen display which is rumored to have a 360×480 pixel resolution.

The setup would appear to be the best of both worlds, offering a large display for Internet browsing or reading ebooks/documents while the portrait orientated QWERTY keyboard still offers efficiencies while sending out text messages or email.

It remains to be seen what comes out of this new leak, but the bet is that if it does make it to the market, it will be run on the BlackBerry OS 6.0.

Limited Edition Team Canada BlackBerry Bold 9700

At the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games, the Canadian Men’s hockey team won the gold metal in their Olympic event and to commemorate this special achievement, Research In Motion (RIM) provided each member of the winning team with a limited edition Blackberry Bold 9700 smartphone that comes with a custom paint job featuring the Canadian flag.

Along with this, RIM also offered up 20 of these limited edition BB to Future Shop which in turn awarded them to their top sales staff. The contest ran through fiscal February with the winners being those that were in the top 20 in Blackberry hardware sales and placed a special focus on clearance merchandise as well as products that fit into the category of “gone when gone”.

No word as to who the lucky employees were but seeing as this is a limited edition item, the same that was award to the Canadian hockey team, you can bet it will have both a high sentimental and monetary value.

Google Gesture Search For Android Devices

Thursday 4 March 2010 @ 2:23 pm

Google Gesture Search For Android Devices

Android devices have been backed by the largest search engine, Google, which has resulted in new innovations and developments being routinely released.

Google has a new application available for the Android powered mobile platform called Gesture Search. The new app augments Google’s other search features such as search by voice and will likely be a valuable tool in situations where you need to be whisper quiet or are looking for a faster input method then the traditional text entry search.

Gesture Search is a Google Labs application that recognizes basic alphanumeric characters drawn on the touchscreen display. Gesture Search offers a faster search experience in locating personal contacts, installed software applications, music files and bookmarks.

If during the gesturing, you make a mistake or perhaps Android doesn’t recognize your messy writing, you can always erase and start again. Handy for the physicians with chicken scratch for writing.

Like many of Google’s other products, Gesture Search includes a bit of smarts. Based upon your personal search history, Google can offer personalized search results that are more specific to your needs. Sounds almost a bit AI like.

You can download Gesture Search through the Android Market but at a minimum, you will need to be on the Android 2.0 operating system, which by the sounds of it will be every US Android handset shortly as there is talk that Android 2.1 is on the way.

Sony Vaio M Netbook On The Way

Sony Vaio M Netbook On The Way

Details about a new entry level Sony netbook, the Sony Vaio M have hit the net somewhat unofficially through the Notebook Review Forums.

The new model does resemble another Sony line, namely the Sony Vaio W and there is some suspicion that the Sony M netbook will ultimately replace the Vaio W in the low end netbook market.

For features, the Sony M comes with a 10.1-inch display screen with 1024×600 pixel resolution, a Pineview N450 processor with a 1.66GHz Intel clock speed and 1GB DDR2 RAM. Additional standard features include a 250GB 5400rpm (revolutions per minute) hard drive, an integrated webcam and wireless network connectivity through Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n) and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR. The units will be available in jet black with pricing to be in the $450-$500 ballpark roughly.

It’s important to be aware that these details have not been made official by Sony as of yet, otherwise we’d probably have some further information about the battery performance, an important consideration when deciding amongst netbooks from the various vendors.

LG GD910 Watch Phone Redesigned?

LG GD910 Watch Phone Redesigned?

The LG GD910 watch phone has been a popular gadget since its launch back in 2008 causing quite a bit of excitement when limited quantities were available at the Orange Shop on Bond Street in Central London.

If there was one objection heard about this unique watch, it would have to be that it was on the bulky side. Recently at the LG Digital Experience that was held in Brazil, a new watch surfaced that featured a subtle redesign as well as a new logo placement which is now situated at the top of the timepiece rather then at the bottom.

No information about the user interface were available so it’s unclear from the digital snaps if the design changes were purely cosmetic in nature or if any of the underlying functionality has been tweaked to match the visual changes.
